can anyone explain the difference between a policy that has a set amount per condition with a 12 month limit vs a set amount per condition. I'm finding it impossible to compare quotes.

Also if I claim for an illness, does this mean that the illness won't be covered when I renew my policy with the same insurer?

Been researching this for 2 weeks now and it's doing my head in!

Types of pet insurance:-

Lifetime with renewing upper limit - this is the best, but most expensive policy
Lifetime with over life limit - this covers a condition for life, but only to a certain value
12 month policy - this covers a condition for one year with a limit on expenditure and then excludes it from further claims.
When you change policy the insurers will exclude pre-existing conditions and when you claim they will ask you the allow access to the clinical notes from your vet to check whether this is a pre-existing condition without this they will not pay a claim. So this means that a previously claimed for condition will never be covered with a new insurer.
How much cover you needs varies of how big your dog is as most of the drugs are by weight and the bigger the dog you have the more it is going to cost.
I hope this helps. I would also research the type of dog and what type of conditions they are prone to, to assess what cover you need.
Steer clear of any company that is or is underwritten by a company using the letters E and L. Beware whilst they are limiting their own policies they underwrite a lot of others so the sharp practices are popping up with other companies.
