my lovely terrier seemed fine last night and this am... in fact too fine as was doing a lot of tearing around barking and driving us mad (so different from normal). this morning happy to go out but then straining and straining to poo with no results. thought she must be constipated. booked vet appointment. while waiting to take her to vets she was very quiet and sad curled up in her cage, then vomited twice.

vet v concerned. thinks she has HGE (haemorrhagic gastoenteritis) and has kept her in to start "aggressive treatment".

am in shock and very very worried for her and upset.

please cross your fingers for her. Sad

Really sorry to hear that. I hope that all goes as well as possible. You made the appt as soon as you saw signs of illness, so you have done the very best for her.

Batteryhuman · 22/03/2011 14:55

When my lab had that the first symptom was vomited and then he vomited in the night vast amounts of blood and bloody diarrhea. Treatment was iv fluids and careful monitoring and he was an in patient for over a week. He is fine now. It is a horrible disease but I understand the important thing is to start treatment asap as it can progress very fast so you have done the right thing in getting him to the vets.

I hope all goes well.

thanks. feel really shocked at the suddenness of it. and a bit shocked at how v v upset i am if i'm honest. am very calm and capable and sensible when dcs are ill but this has really knocked me sideways.

Oh you poor love, you must be worried sick. Sending positive thoughts and kind wishes to you and to your little terrier.

shrektheturd · 22/03/2011 23:04

Fluids are the key. It can be a bit up and down with these guys for a few days but rapid treatment means most recover well. Good luck.

herladyship · 22/03/2011 23:36

Our terrier had HGE, it was awful but she made a full recovery. Will cross fingers for you and hope she gets better very soon.

SerialComma · 23/03/2011 08:49

Hope she is getting on better today, poor little thing.

KnickersOnOnesHead · 23/03/2011 13:38

Hope you have had some good news today.

oldqueenie · 23/03/2011 22:19

thanks for the kind thoughts. she is much better and went with ds2 to visit her this evening. she is still a bit tragic to behold (and smelly!) but much much perkier than yesterday. phew. she's in overnight again and will see how she is in the morning.

I hope your dog is home with you soon. Glad she is responding well to treatment.

Gonzo33 · 24/03/2011 15:30

Aww I expect your dog is like one of your children though (thats how I saw mine). I hope they recover quickly and that you can take them home soon. (((HUGS))).

oldqueenie · 24/03/2011 22:05

she's still there... maybe home tomorrow. at least they've given her a good wash! she's perky but still poorly. had never heard of HGE before tuesday. the speed with which she went from fine to really sick was quite scary. if you are worried about any sickness / diarrhoea (?sp) in your dog please get vet help. if she had been left a few more hours without treatment she would probably be dead.

So pleased to hear that she is doing well. What a relief, and what a good job you acted so quickly for her.

Vallhala · 25/03/2011 19:53

That's really good news, I'm sure I'm not the only one to be mighty glad to hear it.

Take care, both of you.

JaxTellersOldLady · 25/03/2011 20:35
