Puppy had a close call with a car today!

My dear little puppy managed to get off lead today and ran straight onto a main road. I was holding the lead and as he pulled, it slipped over my wrist.

It all happened so quickly. I remember screaming and heard a man shouting. The car stopped just as it touched teddy. I ran into the road and grabbed his lead then I saw ds (8yo) crying at the side of the road.

I am so relieved that teddy is okay, it was such a close call. I am going to have to buy a different lead with a better gripping handle. Next time we might not be so lucky.

I love my dog so much, I couldn't bear to lose him

Oh Kid, what a terrible shock for you! Thank goodness he is ok. I hope your DS has recovered.

A similar thing happened to us today too. DH had ski gloves on and managed to drop Lollys lead, luckily I was there to grab it, but he didnt realise he had dropped it!

We are okay thanks. Ds cried for a while after it happened, I was and still am surprisingly calm about the whole incident.

I apologised to the driver and thanked him for stopping. I don't think he was impressed at all but it was a complete accident.

Teddy is one lucky pup! Maybe moby is looking after him and us from up above? Either way, I am so relieved mo harm came to teddy.

glad all ok,a good tip is to pass your whole hand through loop at end of lead then hold lead,that way if you do let go the lead is still round your wrist,my mum taught me this when i used to walk our dog when i was a little girl.

That's how I was holding it and as he pulled, the lead flew off my wrist.

I held him extra tight today

Scary Kid but glad you are all ok. Sometimes I think we need near misses to keep us on our toes! Thanks for posting as it has made me more conscious when walking my lot near traffic today

So glad you are all OK Kid, must have been scary. They are flipping pickles these dogs !

If you do lose grip of a lead, never try to pick it up straight away - try to tread on it hard with your foot first (obv don't always even have time for that)

I've found with my dog that although he knows 'stay', if he breaks loose 'sit' is more effective to stop him in his tracks.
Might be worth practising when you're somewhere safe?

This nearly happened to me a few months ago.
My dog is large, very strong and still young and playful. As we walked close to a main road to cross over, a few leaves blew up and across the road she lunged forward, taking me completely by surprise. I managed to hang on to her, but could see the scene in my head, as it could have been.

I now put my hand through the handle, then wrap it a few times around my hand. I'd rather she pulled me flat on my face, then ended up under a car.

Hope your ds is ok. Sometimes these things help to wake us to be more vigilant.

Ooh, kid, after the loss of Moby I'm so glad it was OK.

I don't know if he is on a collar or a harness but we have only recently started using a collar for Poppy (she's 8 months) and that's only because she's wearing a coat which we can't put the harness with. Up until then we always had a harness because we found she pulled so much less and we had better control.

Trouble is, these things happen in a split second, don't they? There's not always time to stop them, I know. Hope your DS is OK and you have all got over the shock.:)

kid i have just seen this now. So So glad he is ok. what a scare for poor ds aswell as you all of course. agree with the tips here although these things happen so quickly and we don't have time to react. definitely think teddy has an angelpup looking out for him.

Teddy has been a bit naughty around house without me realising. He vomited this morning, a huge hard lumpy mess.
Upon inspection, I figured out it was 3 or 4 of dd's hairbands all knotted up, plus some hair and some black plastic bits (a toy of some sort?)
Either way, he managed to regurgitate it and is totally fine. He is still eating, pooping and his usual self. He could of so easily got a blockage. That pup is going to make me go grey with worry!

sounds like he is back on top form!!
