Do you buy the authentic biscuits for it or are there others that fit just as well?? Or do you know a place I can buy the kong bisuits cheaply? Bought one for my dog this morning and he can devour the biscuits from inside the kong in a couple of minutes! Shock He does love it though. Grin

I filled the kong with wet food then stuck it in the freezer. It takes much longer for them to get at it that way and they have to chew for ages before it starts to defrost.

VivaLeBeaver · 05/12/2010 15:28

I don't ude the biscuits. I put peanut butter in it and freeze it, lasts for ages.

nameymacnamechanger · 05/12/2010 15:31

Ooh thanks never thought of freezing stuff in it.

I'm going to use it mainly to amuse him when I'm out so him devouring the treat inside in a couple of minutes aint gonna cut it!

Do all dogs like peanut butter? I'd rather I came home to my kitchen smelling of peanut butter than wet dog food I think. (I'm still adjusting to having a dog can ya tell?!) Grin

You can stuff a Kong with anything your dog likes, a mixture of textures works best.

I usually rub a bit of marmite around inside it, then add some soaked, complete dog biscuits, with maybe a bit of cooked chicken, mash it all down really hard (the end of a rolling pin does this well) Then push some bigger dog biscuits in, like bonios, if your dog likes them, try and really wedge them in. Then shove something largish in the hole (I've found one of those mini scotch eggs is good)

Try and stuff it so you think it's impossible to empty, your dog will probably manage it anyway.
Once my dog has licked and knawed as much as she can, she usually lobbs it around so bits fall out as it bounces about. They can get quite inventive!

Mix any kibble with grated cheese, stuff kong and microwave for 30 secs to melt the cheese. I do wrap in a plastic bag to do the heating because it stinks but my dog loves it!

nameymacnamechanger · 05/12/2010 15:50

Thank you all for these suggestions and tips they are fab. Smile

BatteryHuman - do you give him the cheesy mixture as it is or freeze it and give him it another time??

We dont use our kong quite so much now, but when we did, we packed it with peanut butter, kept him amused for quite a while.

Batteryhuman · 05/12/2010 16:02

Once microwaved I just cool it down in the fridge or just sitting on the side and give it to him like that. I only use just enough cheese to stick the kibble together so it doesn't fall out. peanut butter is also a good glues but doesn't set hard like melted cheese. I used manky end of parmesan the other morning and the smell mixed with hot dog food was boak worthy!

JaxTellersOldLady · 05/12/2010 21:32

Use any dry biscuit/kibble you fancy for your dog. pack it in tightly then squirt some primula cheese or dairylea soft cheese at the end.

Dogs love it. Mine do, and peanut butter too.

I dont use hard cheese - that is kept for serious training treats. Wink

Dexterrocks · 05/12/2010 21:35

I agree with Jax - this is what my dog trainer told me to do.

nameymacnamechanger · 06/12/2010 11:30

We've got a Kong Wobble
Much better and harder for pup to access

JRsandCoffee · 06/12/2010 22:50

We've got a Nylobone Rhino.......spiny thing bought in some cheapy DIY pleace (inexess?) remains the favoured toy, similar idea to the kong but with nobbly bits. I stuff the Rhino with what used to be called marrowbone treats, hours of fun, apparently!

sharbie · 06/12/2010 22:52

I was going to say primula cheese too - my dog and 3 cats go crazy for it.The first time I gave them a taste from an old tube they caught it as it squirted out!

frostyfingers · 07/12/2010 09:17

My dog ate her kong, contents and all so I've given up with them!

pinkanimal · 14/12/2010 18:47

heres a great link I found:- dogs.thefuntimesguide.com/2006/02/dog_recipes_for_kong_chew_toys.php

also try the supermarket sandwich pastes and pates as they are much cheaper.
