and be able to trust them not to raid the bin.

am i dreaming?

They are 7months old, lab x breed.

Would love to be able to leave the kitchen gate open eventually.

How can i train them to leave the bins alone?

Our 4-5 month lab x pup is allowed in the kitchen under supervision (his crate is in there) or when very sleepy. He started showing interest in the bin/dishwasher and fridge, so we're training him to stay in the diner end of the kitchen, out of the food prep end.

It takes a huge amount of patience, but basically every time he crosses past the work tops, we make a correction noise and get him to reverse out. Then he sits, we treat. If he stays sat in the right place, we treat. If we go back to food prep and he doesn't follow, we give it a few seconds, go back and treat. We're building up the time slowly, and he is getting it. Soon I'll have to start hiding round the corner of the door and teaching him to do it when we're not in the room!

There's a section in 'The Culture Clash' which describes how to do it by getting your dogs to sit on a specific mat in the room.

It's hard work but I REALLY want to get this nailed!
