Can I give my lab a little Calpol?

She has a sore psw this evening. No idea how she has done it. If it persists into tomorrow I will take her to the vet. This evening she is just obviously in some discomfort. Can't see any visible wound but she is limping.. and twitching it when laying down... and trying to snatch it away when I gently examine it..

I googled the above question and found a lot of contradictory info and people shrieking about "not giving human drugs to pets..". Fair enough if this is the case but I was wondering if we have a resident vet or veterinary nurse who could give me a professional opinion on whether a small dose of Calpol might be helpful to my lab this evening.

She is nearly 6, very active and in otherwise good health.

I am pretty sure that paracetamol is harmful for dogs

JaxTellersOldLady · 01/11/2010 18:42

NO! Never ever anything paracetamol based for dogs.

Not a professional but I would never use medicine that is designed for humans on an animal unless prescribed by a vet.

Well.. paracetamol is given to dogs by vets.. so I don't think it's paracetamol per se that's harmful.. but get everyone's drift.. obviously paracetamol licensed for humans appears to not be a good idea which is what I was wondering.. Just don't like to see her in discomfort when I might have been able to help but wouldn't want to risk making her ill. Thanks

yes Saltire, iirc it can kill.

Do you have any metacam?

When my dog ingested paracetamol he nearly died so I'm willing to believe that whatever the vets give them is not actually paracetamol in the form that we can take, anyway.

I was told by the vet who treated him (during a stay in doggy hospital for 3 days where he was very, very ill) that paracetamol is toxic to dogs, even a small amount can be fatal or leave them with permanent kidney problems.

But obviously you've decided against it - I do tell this story loads but I would never want anyone to go through what we did, it was horrible.

Hope your woofer feels better soon x

Our vet said to use junior asprin - Disprol I think it was called - for our old dog.

This was many many years ago though and obviously I am not saying you should do this, but we did and it helped for imflamation and pain.
