Can kids be allergic to dogs? must it be something else? to be honest call me naive but i thought people could only be allergic to cats.

yep he could be allergic. although, he may grow out of it. when we got our first kittens as a child i was allergic at first. it was a mild recation but it went after a few days and i have had cats ever since. is he very uncomfortable?

thesunshinesbrightly · 06/09/2010 23:33

I'm allergic to cats to but i get used to the hair and i'm ok.
Ds has exzema but it has calmed down alot since last year, not sure if the dog has just triggered it off again like with the different type of fur.
I hope not only got him today and i'm in love already.

it could just be a reaction to the new fur and his skin might settle down. if it doesn't then i am afraid you might have to rehome your new pal, and i don't say that lightly as i have a new puppy an dit would break my heart to have to give him away.

Thanks Booyhoo, i really hope so.

Would it be bad of me to keep the dog and re-home DS? dog is much better behaved. Wink

Seriously i can't even think about it would totally break my heart to.

Grin

now there's an idea, the way ds1 has behaved today i could go for that aswell.!!

hmm, I've never heard of allergies that you 'get used to'. Usually the way it works with allergies is they get worse the more one is exposed to the allergen. So I would watch out for breathing problems like asthma, you can certainly be allergic to dogs. Your ds may be totally fine, but I would keep an eye.

thesunshinesbrightly · 07/09/2010 00:06

Reckon we should set up a re-homing centre for kids. Grin

POFAKKEDDthechair - I'm really allergic.. streaming eyes, runny nose the lot but once i get used to the fur i'm fine.

I will do and keep my fingers crossed he belongs with me, i'm devoted already.

I believe that you can be tested for allergies which will confirm whether or not he's allergic.

Try petal cleanse. It is a lotion that you rub on your dog's fur which neutralises the dander. It enables us to live with a dog, so I like the product a lot. My husband gets very wheezy with the dog if I do not use it. Plus get a good hoover, with a HEPA filter. We also use air filters.

You do need to use it weekly or the allergy will come back, but it may be useful.

Yes, you can certainly be allergic to dogs and some people find that long haired ones are worse than short hair ones. That's why we ended up with greyhounds as DH has allergy to longer haired dogs even lurchers (sigh). There is also a lot you can do to minimise the impact of the allergen.

Groom the dog regularly out of doors and bath when appropriate (not too often). Wash fabric dog beds/coats etc regularly. Replace carpet with wooden floor/tiles etc (won't hold the hair and is easier to clean). Use a HEPA filter vacuum cleaner and be prepared to clean more often. Limit dogs to certain areas of the house, especially away from DS's room and keep them off furniture (this may be more difficult Grin. Ventilate the house thoroughly. Ensure DS washes hands after handling dog, and that he doesn't handle dog in his pyjamas/sleeping clothes. Good luck, hope you can happily co-exist.

Thank you all for your advice.

Ds's rash has gone! think it may have just been one of those things.

Now i can relax that i don't have to re home my Ds Grin
