And Luther had just come back from gardening leave after being involved in serial killer case. The guy in the hospital bed in a coma is the serial killer.

Luther had been chasing a serial killer/child killer (not sure) and finally got him but then let him fall rather than helping him when he could. He did get him to say where his latest victim was hidden though and she was saved. The killer didn't die but is in a coma.

Apparently, during his long hunt for said killer he was distant from his wife so she went off with Paul McGann.

Saskia Reeves is his boss who fought for his return to her department after he was exonerated of any wrong doing by the police.

Steven Macintosh seems to work there too!

Ruth Wilson was a former child prodigy who he suspects has murdered her parents but can't prove, also bit of a loon.

Luther is brilliant, did anyone see tonights?

Yes, really enjoyed it. Silly in parts but otherwise nail-biting stuff and am enjoying the loony stalker and cool ex-wife. Think Luther himself is a bit too maverick hero for my liking, but the story was great.

apparantly he was a smooth character in The Wire but i like him with this rough edge

I am really enjoying this show............Idriss Elba is seriously gorgeous. Dunno what his ex sees in that lentil vegetarian shoe wearing social worker type though.

Loved Idris Elba in The Wire but Luther is crap. He seems to the 'Dev from Corrie school of acting' where nearly everything he says ends up with him shouting . His boss is totally unconvincing too.

I was looking forward to this (despite the whole "maverick detective" thing, that has never been done before).

It's worse than I imagined it could nbe. I skyplussedit and keep going back to it because I can't believe that it could be so bad, like I keep hoping that it's not really a pile of shit. The cast keeps me going back but it's been 3 goes at episode 1 so far and I still haven't finished. I think I should take the hint.

Very hammy acting and implausible storylines, but so far I'm really enjoying this. It's perfect fantasy/escapism TV (although I had hoped for something more meaty from the Sex God Idris Elba).

Which brings me on to my second point: how can anyone even notice Paul McGann (short, weird shaped head, not sexy) when Idris Elba is on screen? One of the (many) ridiculous premises of this series is that the hot-human-rights-lawyer-wife would realistically choose to shag McGann over Elba. Whatever.
