Dear God, why would any decent person want to work with this lot?

Brave film crew.

The scary thing is that they get let out.

Seems quite a few have serious mental health issues.

brimfull · 10/05/2010 22:09

runawaywife-that's what i was thinking, what a depressing place to work.

Nancy66 · 10/05/2010 22:45

Just watched it - maybe i'm being ridiculously naive here but it CAN'T be that hard to keep drugs out of prison can it?

prisoners are allowed to receive flat packages only - ie only letters, no goods.

Visit for high risk prisoners are no contact - ie conducted behind grates

brimfull · 10/05/2010 22:47

I know
so there must be loads of people grabbing things out of their bumhole during visiting

surely they can search with sniffer dogs /metal detectors all the visitors

shabbapinkfrog · 10/05/2010 22:48

I started to watch it and after about 15 minutes had to turn it off - so depressing. My DS4 (nearly 13) wanted to watch it with me but asked could we turn it off. Why on earth would any women want to work there? It looked terrifying. So many of the men had such serious mental health problems. Very, very sad.

frostyfingers · 11/05/2010 08:45

But thank god they do, otherwise what would happen? The female officer comforting the young self harmer was amazing, and then she explained that her son was disabled after a suicide attempt - it's so, so sad.

I don't know if there are any answers, but it put all my problems in perspective, and filled me with fear for the future of my boys.

tiredemma · 11/05/2010 08:48

I thought that female officer was amazing- she had a great way of giving them a bollocking but still demonstrating that she had great empathy and compassion.

Teffifies me to think that my boys could end up in somewhere like that- the bullying must be horrendous.

tiredemma · 11/05/2010 08:48

terrifies

wannaBe · 11/05/2010 08:52

I was surprised at the number of women working there. I know that sounds sexist but i just can't imagine why.

Equally though I was that that prisoner who smashed up his cell repeatedly will some day be let out into society.

tiredemma · 11/05/2010 08:54

Re- mental health issues- I read an article somewhere that staed that 70% of male prison population had MH problems. 70%

brimfull · 11/05/2010 16:27

I kept thinking about how the majority of them had probably had shit childhoods-god it was depressing viewing.
How people work there day in day out I don't know.
I trained as a mental health nurse and hated it as it was depressing -their jobs were 10times worse.

BigBadMummy · 11/05/2010 16:29

Made very uncomfortable viewing.

Those home made weapons looked terrifying too.

And who puts a BlackBerry up their arse?!!!!!

brimfull · 11/05/2010 16:31

I thought she was talking about an actual blackberry fruit and was thinking what size of blackberry does she eat?

RunawayWife · 11/05/2010 19:18

I thought the most scary thing was at some point this scum gets let out again.

I though the woman guard was lovely she was so good with the inmates, ever cell smasher who had threatened to kill her.

I know quite a few prison guards (womans Prison) and most of them are so lovely, I never can understand why they would want to be in such a crap place.

By the end of it I wanted to slap the self harming bloke with his winging "I wanna go home" If he liked home so bloody much maybe he should not have committed a crime and gone to prison.

I know I am heartless

Scary place though, and the person I thought was the vilest was the young man who was so excited about 2 hanging in a week.
