Life on Mars / Ashes to Ashes question

I watched Life on Mars and really enjoyed it, as I understood it Sam Tyler jumped off the top of a building after he awoke from his coma and went back to the 70s and lived happily ever after...

But, at a friends house recently I saw two episodes of Ashes to Ashes (Not something i'd seen before) What happened to Sam??!

I don't have any idea what series of Ashes to Ashes I saw so don't know if it has been revealed or if its yet to come but I am dying to know.

According to the storyline in Ashes to Ashes, Sam died some years later, but before 1981. It is all a mystery which is being investigated by the new 'time traveller' and will hopefully be cleared up by the end of the series.

We've just signed up for Virgin so i'm hoping the first series will be on demand and I can catch up.

On series 3 of Ashes at the moment. nearly finished. Get the box sets and watch right though and series 3 is on iplayer atm
