THE WIRE - worth persisting

I was given a boxed set of the first series of the Wire. DH and I have watched the first two episodes and (maybe because I'm knackered) am finding it hard to get into the plot. Yet everyone says it's such a wonderful series.

Should we keep going?

Yes, keep going. The third/fourth episode was when it really started to shine for me. As others have said, put the subtitles on.

I started watching it when BBC2 were showing it while I was on maternity leave. DS was frequently breastfed with The Wire in the background - I would Sky+ it and save it for feeding times! After watching series 1 and having told DH about each episode, we bought the boxed set and I watched the same series through again with him. We've now done all the others.

I've bought series 1 for a good few other people now, trying to get more people into it as it's so good. But quite a few of them haven't watched it yet...

"Its all in the game". Omar is awesome. Fave character me thinks. Well so many great characters though. D'Angelo is up there as one of the best overall.

If you are watching it for the second time I can also recommend Re-up here

Don't read it if you haven't seen all the series though as it contains lots of spoilers. But is great for filling in the bits you didn't quite get and has lots of background info.

Honestly, I've turned into a proper groupie it's embarrassing.

Moleworth,me too.DH bought me series 5 for my birthday, last Oct,but I'm holding out watching it,and the rest of season 4,for as long as I can.

I re - watched series 3 with subtitles last weekend, and got a whole lot more from it.Omar is def my favourite.

Obsessive I know, but has anyone noticed a lot of very 'English' words used in the script?.Omar talks about being in 'pokey' instead of jail, and in the scene where Bubbs loses his trousers to some dealers, the whole scene is played out with them being referred to as 'pants',until the last scene when Bubbs complains that he lost his 'trousers'.I've spent a lot of time in the US and have never heard either word used, ever.

Sigh,I'm a Wire nerd.

Best programme ever! We watched with subtitles all the way through. Gutted as we thought there was a Season 6, only to find we were wrong!! Have managed to watch a couple of films since we ran out of Wire episodes though, it had been the only thing we had watched since Xmas. Enjoy, so jealous.

Watched a couple more episodes with subtitles now and getting into it. DH is totally hooked.

As well as the accent and all the street slang, I think I was thrown by the unconventional structure. I was expecting it to be a cop show, like 24 or something, with a lot of chasing around. But in fact, I'm liking the fact that it is a more character-based narrative (like Mad Men, which I adore).

Thanks for the subtitle tip.
