I've just found this on iplayer - sorry if there's another thread. I love this programme

Though I'm having trouble not doing a gigantic at the generic rock/ambient soundtrack to the documentary bits

I looked for a thread before and couldn't find it. I found tonight's programme very very refreshing after the fiasco of the last couple of competitions. Yes there was a fair amount of chat with the competitors, but it was relevant - ie about their musical life as opposed to their favourite clothes, sports, etc. And we got to hear full, or near full, performances. Perhaps we'll even get the full concertos this year? Here's hoping.

Goingspare · 16/04/2010 23:05

Missed it tonight, but will watch at some point. DD1 took up the violin when Nicola Benedetti won, she was so inspired by her frock in the final.

MajesticScallop · 17/04/2010 19:05

I did a bit of a at the brass winner last night tbh - thought there were at least two better players in there.

But yes, lovely to be able to hear the music though. And great to find a thread about it on here too.

Shame only three competitors will make it to the concerto final though. It's always been one from each category in the past hasn't it??

choosyfloosy · 18/04/2010 14:36

Only three competitors? (I havne't actually watched the whole of this yet, as am really trying to go to bed at the same time as dh at the mo). That seems a bit strange, though i suppose it makes the final concert more of a bearable length. Perhaps they think the percussionists are winning too often??

Anyone watch the pianists last night? Thought the decision was absolutely right, the winner was fantastic.

Itsjustafleshwound · 01/05/2010 12:58

This year has been brilliant. I know so little about classical music, but I am just floored by the talent of these kids.

It makes a good break from all the other electioneering on the box ...

agh! thanks. just found this on iPlayer after seeing this thread. didn't realised it was on, and definitely impressed at the length of the programme compared to the last few years (just watching strings npw, will catch up on the other 2 another time).

What's that about only 3 competitors?? Isn't there a woodwind final at some point? I'll be gutted if that's the case (am a flautist).

Will have a look on the website.

Anyway... thanks for pointing this out

MajesticScallop · 02/05/2010 09:10

They're having a semi-final where all five category winners compete to narrow it down to three for the actual concerto final.

Seems a real shame for the ones that won't quite make it.

MajesticScallop · 02/05/2010 09:11

PS picc - woodwind final BBC4 next Friday evening!

picc · 02/05/2010 20:48

thanks had found the website and looked it up as I was so perturbed at the idea of there being no woodwind final!

I guess I can appreciate why they are honing it down to 3 for the concerto final.

Watching the keyboard final now. First guy is really drawing me in.....

MajesticScallop · 08/05/2010 08:28

So, picc, did the right one go through? I can never tell with flautists and clarinettists whether they're any good or not.

Was also very distracted by the flautist's fringe. And the second clarinettist's mysterious headband.

Poor second oboist, really felt for her.

picc · 09/05/2010 14:50

Am watching it today (only ever get to watch things at random times on iPlayer nowadays....).

Very excited, though!

Will let you know....

picc · 09/05/2010 16:39

Well... I really wasn't expecting that, I must say!

I thought the flautist had the most gorgeous tone. A tone to die for. One you could listen to all day... but she didn't really draw me into her performance.

But then none of them did really. Not like in the string/ keyboard round where you felt like you could leap through the screen almost.

The guy that came closest to that was the final clarinetist, but he was never going to get it cos he's just so raw. Everything about him is. His tone, too. (compared to the first clarinetist, for example)
(and I really sympathise with having to completely unpick your technique from scratch.... I was told on my first day at JRCM that I flapped my arms like a chicken!)
(maybe that's why I was drawn to his playing the most...)

the oboist... god!! poor girl! reallly sympathise.... they didn't show a post-performance interview, did they? poor thing must have been so upset.

will be interesting to see how she fares in the next round....
technically, she is very good!

MajesticScallop · 09/05/2010 20:40

I agree, the standard was a bit off compared with other categories - I think that nerves are harder to hide with wind instruments, though, aren't they (I used to be an oboist a long long time ago so am well versed in making excuses about wobbly lips, dodgy reeds etc!).

I liked the clarinettists the best - I thought the first one might creep through and win, but then they said they thought he didn't communicate with the audience, which bemused me a bit! Clarinet no. 2 was just so cute (looked like my six-year-old DS!) and fabulously musical - wish they hadn't shown the flashback to his previous bad technique really, as it was hard to get that out of my mind when watching him.

I just didn't know about the flautist - she didn't really do a lot for me, I thought her Bach especially was a bit dull - but then the judges raved about it so what do I know??

Percussion next week. Then I really will be bemused!!

JonesTheSteam · 09/05/2010 21:43

I'm catching up on i-player now... Just finished watching the woodwind final (I'm an oboist so thought I'd start with the best section first... LOL)

Thought the oboists were both amazing (really felt for the second one!!) and the first clarinettist had a wonderful tone... Really impressed with how much the second clarinettist has come on since he last performed and with how much he's worked on his technique....

The flautist though... Wow!!! Her Bach made me tearful it was so beautiful and thought her last piece was incredible... Really glad they put her through.... and surprised I guessed right before hearing the judges' comments and the result!!

NoahAndTheWhale · 09/05/2010 21:51

Must watch these on iplayer

MajesticScallop · 16/05/2010 12:25

Final this evening.

I think Lara the pianist will win.

picc · 16/05/2010 20:31

Crept up on me again! Need to catch up on the semi-final AND the final.
Without even watching the semi-final, I assume the pianist is in the final... and kinda think she'll win.

MajesticScallop · 16/05/2010 20:36

I'm not saying anything......

MajesticScallop · 16/05/2010 20:38

PS the most astonishing aspect of the final really was the physical transformation of the teeny tiny trombonist who won in 2008! How can that happen in two years????

picc · 16/05/2010 20:45

ooo! looking forward to it. probably won't get to watch them both til later in the week. will try not to peek at result before then
