Does anyone remember this mini series in the late '80's? And who was the female lead? Was it Diana Rigg?

I remember this!! My mum watched it, so I did too. I must have been about 9/10 . The son was called Kit.

I also watched The Life and Loves of a She Devil! loved it!

squeezylouisie · 13/04/2010 22:57

yes I remember this! she called the son 'Kitten' and his wife 'Pusscat'. Wasn't there also a creepy voiceover bit where she said something like 'disloyalty and treachery are the severest of crimes, thats why they deserve the severest punishment....'

I remember this. The mother baked poisonous cookies. She poisoned her best friend when she was a little girl, and then she tried to poison her ex-husband's new wife's children with poisoned marzipan. I can't believe how much I remember of it!

it was superb and it was diana rigg...awesomely melodramatic guff!

EightiesChick · 14/04/2010 22:15

I remember this and funnily enough, I looked for it on DVD/video but you can't get it, so I bought the book (by Domini Taylor) second-hand on Amazon and have just been enjoying it. I remember getting it out of my local library after watching the TV series. If ou google around, there seem to be a lot of fans of it, so maybe it'll get a DVD release one day. Diana Rigg was spectacularly psychopathic.

bentneckwine1 · 14/04/2010 22:43

Did they have a nuclear bomb shelter in the garden where the daughter-in-law painted?!

pooka · 14/04/2010 22:45

Oh I remember this too. Was chilling. Diana Rigg fantastic. I remember the voice over - puts me in mind of desperate housewives (though way better than DH).

TwoIfBySea · 14/04/2010 23:07

This was one of the best series of the 80s, it was shown again on one of the satellite channels, can't remember which one, a few years ago.

The shelter was where the mother's ex-husband's new wife had a photography studio - and the mother got her cousin to lock the woman in so she suffocated to death and he was blamed. I got the book when the series was out first time around.

Classic. Diana Rigg was chilling, really scary as the mother.

I SO remember this! Bought the book too! Kit's wife was also in Peak Practice (anyone remember that? She was married to the guy who was Mr Wickham in Pride and Prejudice). David McCallum was Kit's dad (Man from Uncle anyone?) And I've loved Diana Rigg since the Avengers. Oh what a tangled web!

Er...not showing my age here am I?

EightiesChick · 15/04/2010 00:14

Think the shelter was an old WW2 bomb shelter that was now being used as a developing room for the photographer.

thaliablogs · 15/04/2010 21:33

It's regularly on on one of the cable channels, I watched it a few months ago but have seen it since. UK gold or similar.

Tootingbec · 28/04/2010 20:54

Oh my god I loved that programme when it was on (I must have been about 13 I think....) I too have searched the web for a DVD but some reason the BBC haven't released it - although apparently there is a petition out to get them to do it!

PollyParanoia · 29/04/2010 12:13

Did she try and drown the daughter in law in the bath in the end but Kitten came and saved her (and killed mother in Greek tragedy style?).
god it was good.
