Finbar, it's something like because in the States instead of having a break between programmes they go straight from one programme to another then about 10 minutes or so in they break and have for production credits. It's also why it's common in sitcoms etc to have that 'catch' at the end, so they have a break 2 minutes towards the end then the final 'catch' that you feel you have to watch then straight into the next programme. It's a way of getting people not to change channel between programmes, at least that's how it was described to me.
