Olympic Curling - when did Steve Cram become an expert?

Steve Cram is commentating on the Curling (BBC 2 now).....since when did he become an expert?. Should add that I'm no expert but he does sound like he knows what he's talking about.

Since he was told he would be paid for commentating, and was read a book on curling.

Sorry, he probably read the book himself.

Hmm, just deciding which sport I should try my hand at commentating on . Mind you Curling is only every 4 years! The latest cry was "well swept".
