Can I just say, probably for the trillionth time, that Erik is probably the scrummiest most delicious person on the planet? [droooooooool]

OP posts:
teameric · 11/12/2009 12:40

exactly, and just for a little Eric fix here.... sigh.....

pofacedandproud · 11/12/2009 12:47

one thing that annoys me is Sookie's ability to mind read is very erratic. Why can't she mind read her brother? Or her brother's psycho girlfriend? Or Sam for that matter?

wintera · 11/12/2009 12:56

She has trouble reading Sam because of what he is. As for the others, in the book it sort of explains that she has had to control her condition for years otherwise it would send her round the bend listening to all those thoughts all day! But sometimes she lets them in, sort of like a radio tuning in I suppose.

greenday · 11/12/2009 12:57

Well, if you read her books, she explains that she tries to put her 'shields' up and that shapeshifters and weres (yes, they come into the picture .. in season 3 I think!) are hard to read. And also, she doesn't want to read Sam's thoughts as he is her boss and she likes working for him.

And she also says that some people are very loud broadcasters and she can easily read their thoughts, while some just give off a blurry broadcast .. like that of radio stations.

Oh my, no prizes for guessing what I've been obsessed with lately!!

theyoungvisiter · 11/12/2009 13:19

and she also says (in the books) that some people think very clearly in words or clear pictures, whereas others are just a muddle of emotions and moods - so in those cases she could tell they are angry but maybe not why.

And in the books it's made very clear that Sam can feel when she reading him and has the ability to shut her out if he wants to - like "a shutter coming down", she says.

I think the whole mind-reading thing is much better explained in the book - for probably obvious reasons in that the only way they can show it in the tv series is through voiceover.

theyoungvisiter · 11/12/2009 13:22

I tell you what I've been wondering - maybe this is a case of the series "embroidering" on the books a bit...

Why does vampire blood have such an extreme effect on some people (Jason and Amy for eg) and very little effect on others? Sookie has drunk loads of Bill's blood, not to mention some of Longshadow's and later Eric's I think. Yet she doesn't get the weird hallucinations and all that - why not?

In the books* the whole "V" business isn't really spelled out - she just says that some people use it as a drug. Whereas in the series it's all sniffing this and snorting that and taking drops like tabs of acid.

  • I should say, I have only read books 1 and 2 so maybe it's dealt with later on?
pofacedandproud · 11/12/2009 17:48

they ought to explain the mind reading thing a bit better. At one point she could hear everyone's thoughts in the bar and it was driving her mad, then later, nothing at all.

greenday · 12/12/2009 03:16

theyoungvisitor - would you believe it if I told you I spent the whole night pondering the answer to your question!!! But it is only because I have read all the 8 books (and eagerly awaiting her latest 2 books which aren't out yet!).

So my take is -
Sookie is different (apart from being a telepath). What she is, is revealed in the 8th book. And what she is, Jason is not.

So, just like the vampires can glamour a normal human being, Sookie is immune to their glamour. Which to me, explains why V blood have more extreme effects on Jason and Amy than it does on Sookie, except make her more robust in her physical appearance and her senses heightened.

wintera · 12/12/2009 17:47

I have only read the first 3 books. Hoping to get some more for Christmas though! But a friend of mine told me the same thing that greenday has said. That there is something different about Sookie that is revealed later on, so I suppose we just have to be patient until it is revealed!

theyoungvisiter · 12/12/2009 21:59

oh sadly I know what that "difference" is! (stumbled over something on Wiki and added in bit of guesswork but am 99% sure I'm right)

So I suppose I can see how that would feed into Sookie being slightly immune to vampire blood...

It would be jolly convenient having a boyfriend who was a shapeshifter. He could travel for free on public transport and if you lost your keys he could get through the catflap and let you in. (practical, me)

chaliepud · 15/12/2009 12:01

The ook People have the entire True Blood series for £8.99 at the moment, they are by Charlaine Harris. I can't decide whether to read them all now or wait for Series 2 on TV, whenever that may be!

greenday · 15/12/2009 15:05

The TV series have strayed way off from the books .. so IMO, it's really like reading / watching two different stories.

amystev · 15/12/2009 15:29

Thanks for that chaliepud - just ordered them! Little Christmas present for me!!

SleepingLion · 15/12/2009 15:39

greenday - I think the latest book is out now - saw one in Waterstone's today which I don't think was one of the Book People 8.

I am reading the books - just started no. 3, and am a bit disappointed that it looks as if one of the characters is going to be phased out of the books... Hope it's not the same for the TV series because that character is my favourite!

greenday · 15/12/2009 16:26

Which character? Just curious ...
I won't do any spoilers if you don't want to know

greenday · 15/12/2009 16:27

Ooh, meant to say .. thanks for sounding me out on the latest book. I know it's been out on hardback, but I'm waiting for the softback to arrive. Cheaper!!

Will look out for it! Yay!

SleepingLion · 15/12/2009 16:32

It's Bill I think he gets written out of the books

Oh - the book I saw was a hardback still - I saw it while trying to decide if I could afford to get DH the new Prachett for Xmas even tho it's still in hardback (I couldn't, btw ). Sorry to get your hopes up
