Hi, has anyone seen CBeebies new programme "I can cook"?

It's quite good seeing the kids cooking, not sure I like the presenter Katy, she seems a bit false and I don't like all those stupid songs she sings badly.

Has anyone seen Katy in anything else?

I think that the BBC is finally delivering what they appeared to promise when they first trailed "Big Cook, Little Cook". I was so disappointed by that.

I agree that the songs are somewhat unnecessary, but I think the presenter engages children well.

BunnyLebowski · 13/10/2009 09:50

There was a thread on here a while ago extolling the fabness of Katie but I don't get it. I find her more than a wee bit irritating and as you say she can't sing for toffee!

Oh and the very idea of putting grapes on a pizza made me turn off in gastronomic disgust.

Give me Big Cook and Little Cook any day. At least there's a money shot in every episode.

Monadami · 13/10/2009 09:56

It made me laugh when she gave her yucky looking easy peasy grape pizza to Alex and Andy, you saw Andy take a bite, but clearly avoided eating the bit with the grape.

I love Big Cook Little Cook, but some of their customers are a bit far fetched. I couldn't believe it when they turned the Gingerbread man into a Cannibal, by serving him up Gingerbread people.

pmsl at gingerbread cannibal

Not to mention their serious lack of portion control. I mean 7 individual custard tarts for Snow White....and she's supposed to stay hot eating that much!

jetonthedancefloor · 13/10/2009 12:52

my little one loves I can cook - she even made the fish cakes - but then didnt eat them as she didnt like them

The songs are ridiculous though - too many words in a line for little ones to learn, and too many of them!!

Give me big cook ben any time

bran · 13/10/2009 13:16

I think I Can Cook is pretty good. The presenter doesn't talk down to the kids, seems to genuinely enjoy their company and can actually cook. None of these things are true for Big Cook Little Cook, Big Cook especially has clearly hardly ever been in a kitchen except to make himself a Pot Noodle.

The I Can Cook presenter seems strangely familiar, has she been on adult TV?

jumpyjan · 13/10/2009 13:34

I really like I Can Cook and DD is really into cooking so she loves it.

It is really nice to see kids recipes that don't involve "raisins for eyes" (Big Cook Little Cook) in every single recipe!!

jetonthedancefloor · 13/10/2009 19:29

i do actually like the cooking part - as does DD - she is glued Its just the singing really. Not so much the regular songs, but when she sings about the recipe and what she did, DD cries and shouts - "dont know the worms" - translated - "dont know the words". Mind, after she has watched each episode 100 times on sky plus, guess we wont have that problem!!

The fishcakes were quite tasty - havnt tried the cheesecake yet - but that is next

ruddynorah · 13/10/2009 19:34

yes i like it too, as does dd aged 3.5.

i like that it's actual cooking, not just making food into shapes like big cook little cook.

and i do like that she lets the kids get on with it, not interfering with their work.

must say i love her fruit and veg shaped bean bags too!! but yes, ditch the song near the end, pointless.

Monadami · 16/10/2009 14:04

I don't like her laugh and her songs, but like the programme. I thought the fish bake looked quite nice.

funtimewincies · 16/10/2009 20:18

Are you using the lower case 'i' in an ironic way ruddynorah ? It's one of the most annoying things about the whole programme. Why has children's TV suddenly become allergic to a capital letter?

stakethroughtheheartofgold · 16/10/2009 20:26

dd (2.5) absolutely adores "that cookin thing", keeps her utterly rapt all the way through. agree songs are superfluous though.

haven't made anything from it, but dd insists on 'helping' every time i set foot in the kitchen anyway, so tbh her being glued to the telly gives me the chance to actually cook without her interference assistance. although i do have a pot of mascarpone in the fridge and i'll admit to mixing up the cheesecake topping just to spoon it straight out of the bowl

mrmump · 16/10/2009 20:32

Its her false laugh that drives me insane. "Look at my sticky hands" Huh huh huh huh huh huh. And the lock on the garden gate that doesn't actually lock. Not that I've seen it...

hazeyjane · 17/10/2009 09:32

We have made the melting moments and baked spaghetti. I like the fact that there are kids actually cooking, and proper food ( although agree about grapes on pizza - gag) and dd's (3.7 and 2.5) love it.

She doesn't annoy me, she is pretty mild.

The songs remind me of Phoebe's songs in Friends, especially the one about carrot and courgette muffins

sazzypaz · 04/12/2009 21:36

me and my toddler enjoy it, and we love katie. probably me more as katie feels very familiar and not anoying like most other childrens presenters (expect poy, chris and andy of course).
we love cooking in the kitchen together so watching it on childrens TV just repeats what we do in everyday life. i just wish i could get L's addiction to pixar films sorted, then i would watch more of katie!
i saw big cook little cook a few years back as guest present big brothers little brother, swearing away, which immediately put me and my partner off them. L loves them though.
love the songs, keep them x

toddlerama · 07/12/2009 21:01

The song is dreadful. My sister will 'phone me when it's particularly cack so we can laugh at it. Carrot and courgette song was a new low. Also don't like the way she puts fruit in savoury dishes. Not that it's wrong, I just don't like the way she does it. Grapes on a pizza. Honestly.

glasjam · 08/12/2009 13:31

I don't think anyone will have seen her before becuause she's straight out of drama school (Exeter University) and she's only 23!!!

If you find her laugh irritating it might be to do with the fact that it appears to be inserted intermittently along with the childrens' giggles just to liven up the visually dull bits. I think if any of us had a bit of our laugh replayed to us frequently and out of context it would annoy the hell out of us too.

I think she should work a bit on her songs though and agree about it sounding like Phoebe Still, not bad and she does genuinely seem to be enjoying it - quite refreshing, my little girl loves it.

liath · 08/12/2009 17:52

Hazeyjane, that's so true about the songs being like Phoebe's!!

We made the strawberry meringue ice cream yesterday, it is bloody lovely and I almost had to physically restrain DH from polishing it off after the kids had gone to bed.

Meglet · 08/12/2009 21:14

she was in Eastenders, someone called Honey?

I love I can cook. We make the Honey Tea Loaf, totally idiot proof.

glasjam · 09/12/2009 12:37

No that wasn't her Meglet although there is a similarity. I haven't tried any of the recipes yet, maybe I'll try the honey loaf for starters.

gorionine · 09/12/2009 12:41

""Oh and the very idea of putting grapes on a pizza made me turn off in gastronomic disgust."" me too, so much so that I started a thread about the yucky pizza a few weeks back!

Never seen the honey loaf of strawberry merigue, every time I turn Cbeebies on it is the awfull pizza!

ElenorRigby · 09/12/2009 12:52

DD 2.3 absolutely loves this and goes nuts for Katy!
