anyone recently started watching the Wire?

I have recently started watching the Wire on dvd and OMG it's killing me. I thought no way it can live up the hype but it surpassed all expectations, I just love it love it love it! only problem is that we end up watching 3 episodes straight and next day I wander into the office in a daze and I think its only a matter of time till I start speaking like a West Baltimore homie to my boss

anyway, i know I am late to this, but if anyone is going through the same, come on here and let's compare obsessions!

(I'd just like to add that my job involves an awful lot of speaking in public (to people who don't expect me to sound like Snoop) )

TheMysticMasseuse · 05/10/2009 14:23

I am not googling Snoop, I am not googling Snoop, I don't want to know who he is, i have no interest in spoilers, i will stick to watching episodes in their natural order...

gosh i am so bad. i doubt i'll make it to this evening without googling snoop.

LOL chaotica. i have to write A LOT in my job, lots of serious-ass papers and it is getting really hard to think about things in a non-wire way.

yesterday i bumped into a friend on the corner of waitrose and i yelled "yo, what y'all doing on my corner!". blank, slightly concerned stare from him...

dh and i have been practicing the West Baltimore "All right" for weeks, to no avail..

Don't google!

Or y'all all gowna feel some PAIN for what you done, mo'f'ker.

(At least I know a few academics I can talk this way with - but none I work with at the moment, unfortunately.)

Chaotica · 05/10/2009 14:35

I can't do that 'all right' either (still sound like I'm from east B'more )

ilovemydogandmrobama · 05/10/2009 17:11

I understand Baltimore, being from growing up in California, in 'da hood'

TheMysticMasseuse · 05/10/2009 19:02

Chaotica I am disappointed in you... them eastern boys, they SOFT!

Another one suffering serious withdrawal. My evenings are just so long without The Wire...At the moment we are watching The Corner (another David Simon series that came before The Wire). Lots of our favourite actors appear in it but in different guises (Lester as a drug addict etc) but its nowhere near as good and I fear that no TV will ever seem good again.

Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit.

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 08/10/2009 09:33

I watched all 5 seasons last year.....

Miss it so badly. Nothing compares, tho' The Sopranos and The West Wing help a little bit....

Sheeeeeeeeeeeeiiiiiiit............

Itsjustafleshwound · 08/10/2009 12:27

Just started watching the Wire and getting hooked - thanks for the tip re: subtitles - it makes it so much easier ...

FuriousGeorge · 08/10/2009 21:57

We are on series 4 and I'm dreading getting to the end of them all.My favourite is Omar-very erudite.I can understand fluent 'bawlmore' now.

Interestingy,dh is watching a film on FIVEUSA right now with Stringer Bell in it.

TheMysticMasseuse · 09/10/2009 11:10

i have gotten to season 2, episode 4. I am not liking this series as much as the first though.. does it get better??? i am not "getting" the new characters much, the case is not going anywhere, and there's not enough McNUlty (although his naked ass- i am allowed to say ass on a wire thread, right?- on episode 2 was the highlight of my week- maaaaaan he's fit). Also not enough Greggs. But at least, Omar back!

Season 2 does get better, though it was my least favourite one of the lot.....

charitygirl · 09/10/2009 12:00

Try not to watch three a night though - just because you'll run out sooner!

just finished Series 5 emoticon

Honestly, though, the Sopranos is just as good. Sadly, I've finished that too.

Cies · 09/10/2009 12:02

Oooh, I might have to go back and watch them all over again! DH really didn't get it, and gave up during season 1, so it was my little treat on the nights he was working late. Now I'm going on maternity leave I can watch during the day. Do you think it will harm my newborn

fiercebadrabbit · 09/10/2009 12:17

Grrr, dh has been working late every night for weeks now, meaning we are stuck after episode one of series four as I'm not allowed to watch it without him.

I can't wait to get stuck in again but at the same time am dreading it ending, esp as series five is meant to see a small drop off in quality.

Is Generation Kill anything like as good?

TheMysticMasseuse · 11/10/2009 11:39

on series 2, episode 6 now... have lost a bet with dh that mcnulty would bed Russell by the end of epi 6. however, really into it now and i am really enjoying it..

we;re getting much better at "Oh'Aight" :-) and dd2 (17 months) does a mean "BBAAABooooo" (to warn of incoming pooolice)

ok so i have only got the finale of season 2 to watch. how could i say i didn't like this season? i've got goosebumps just thinking about it. i think the character of frank sobotka has got to be the best character on tv ever, ever, ever. and the actor who plays him, why hasn't he won oscars and stuff?

to quote my new fave gangsta (proposition Joe): "sheeeeeeeeeeeeeet"

Interesting interview on the Today proghere with Steve Earle who played Bubs' mentor in The Wire. I had no idea who the guy who played the part was.

Numberfour · 06/11/2009 19:27

seems like i have to have another go at it. i tried to watch it a while ago but got lost after about episode 3. think i will try again. I LOVE good tv.... and usually tolerate crap tv too!
