You think you know and love someone. Then suddenly, from out of the blue, they announce that they've never heard of Spaced.

I've been married to DH for 18 years and last night he said that he'd never heard of Spaced. There was something on tv about funniest characters or series and the talked about Spaced. I said something like "That was such genius, we should get the DVD", and he said "What is it? I've never seen it."

Obviously marriages have crumbled under lesser stress, but I am fighting the good fight and ordering both series today so I can have a good laugh to educate DH.

I blame myself, how could I be so out of touch with the state of my marriage that I didn't know about this.

I named my cat Daisy after Ms Steiner. And DD's name sounds very like Marsha

I would forgive your other half not having heard of it, and consider it your own fault for not already owning it on DVD. Buy it IMMEDIATELY and if he doesn't instantly love it and declare the finest show ever made THEN start divorce proceedings. And then make sure you watch all the amazingly good extras and every episode with the piss-funny commentary on. It's better than a husband anyway.

Actually, how lucky is he to be watching it for the first time? Wish I could watch them all for the first time

i love spaced...! simon pegg always makes me laugh and have caught shaun of the dead twice over the last couple nghts on itv2 and still laught to bits! Hot Fuzz just as ace... always giggle when i pass a somerfield now!

MavisGrind · 20/07/2009 22:31

Fear not - try this!. Bless Channel 4OD.

Agree, not hearing of Black Books would be far worse

bran · 20/07/2009 22:56

Now listen - I'm not going to even investigate the Black Books issue until I've sorted out this Spaced problem. I suspect that he hasn't watched much or any of Black Books but I'm going to let it pass until I feel stronger.

I'm not blameless in this, I accept that I have wilfully neglected to watch Hot Fuzz.

Thanks for all your kind support and suggestions.

We've recently discovered Spaced and liking it so far. I think the episode with the rave was sooo funny

We've got series 2 on our DVD rental to be watched after we finish Season 2 of House!

littlelamb · 21/07/2009 18:50

Spaced is great. And now I have an urge to watch it and I have lent it to someone

littlelamb · 21/07/2009 18:53

And bugger me I can't even get a YouTube fix as it's all been removed due to copyright

bran · 21/07/2009 20:15

It's on 4od littlelamb.

I'm hoping the dvds get here by the end of the week. DH is back on Thursday night so we could have a load couple of beers and watch the whole thing a few episodes.

Another dilemma. The dvd has arrived, but DH won't be home until late tomorrow. Do I start watching (I want to) or do I wait? I haven't seen the series since it was on tv so I'm itching to see it again. Is there any reason to wait?

OP posts:
bran · 22/07/2009 19:46

Forget that last dilemma. I've just ripped open the Amazon box and it's only a couple of books and a watch. The DVD is being shipped from somewhere else.

My dh just said to me once in exasperation

"I just don't think it is as funny as you do"

He is a philistine.

Pruneurs · 22/07/2009 20:16

Oh Bran

We have the dvds....I will watch in your honour

Marthasmama · 22/07/2009 20:21

We often say 'We've gotta drink int we?'. Spaced is DH's favourite comedy of all time. Might have to have a bit of a watch...... Have you watched it with the homage-a-thon on? That's an eye opener. Some of the references are obvious, some very subtle.

bran · 29/07/2009 22:52

Just in case anyone was worried about my DH, we are half way through series two and he's really enjoying it. I think he's a little disappointed that he didn't see it a decade ago as so many of the references are very specific to that particular point in time. It's very good to watch with a bottle of beer in the hand.

love love love Spaced!

All time fave episode is the night club one....

TaurielTest · 29/07/2009 22:55

... bogling to Aswad!
Ahh.

LittleWhiteWolf · 31/07/2009 16:04

Have you finished it yet? Does your DH love it? I discovered Spaced at uni and when I met my now DH after dropping out of uni (too much watching of Spaced DVDs...and Red Dwarf and Black Books and other fine, fine comedies) I made sure he watched it all and loved every second.

I was even one of those fans who owned both series on DVD then bought the special edition of the whole series and gave my other set to a friend so she would love it also.

bran · 01/08/2009 14:10

We haven't finished yet, he's been abroad quite a bit and had a couple of nights out. He has quite quickly copped on to the fact that a beer and a couple of episodes of Spaced puts me into a very relaxed mood so we've been having a few more early nights too, so happiness all round.

I'm completely blown away by the level of drug use in it. I don't remember it being quite that ubiquitous the first time around. Of course I wasn't middle-aged the first time I watched it. [old-fogey emoticon]

I am so glad they made Spaced, so when my kids ask one say what it was like to live in a houseshare in North London in the late 90's I can just show them the DVD. My life in my 20s - to a tee.
