i used to love, but love, but LOVE ER in its first years... it was all fab, the characters were great and well developed, the adrenaline and workplace poliitcs were spot on, the relationships between the characters were credible and evolved in ways that made them feel really close to life. plus, of course, George.

then it became totally crap, and there was definitely a correlation with the amount of focus Abby- sureyl the most miserable, predictable and unsympathetic character- got till it literally became the Abby miser-fest, and a bunch of people you couldn't care less about shagging each other repeatedly and occasionally remembering to do a bit of work.

i kept watching out of loyalty, but the finally this season things are really great again, ok so i think Angela Basset will never look like a doctor if she tried a million years, but everyone else is spot on...

well, pointless post really i am just it's all about to end!!! what next????

I agree, pretty much. The series before this last one was utterly dire. When we reached the finale, I honestly didn't care whether it was Sam or Pratt in the exploding ambulance, and would cheerfully have seen them both written out. Plus the seemingly endless stream of men falling in love with Neela became more and more irritating. I wasn't surprised that its end was announced and decided to go on watching for the last series, even though I'd gone off it, to see how everything was tied up.

This season, for me, has been a mix of middling and a return to the old standard. Angela Bassett as ER chief doesn't work for me. However, the one with three versions of Neela's day, Donnie-Darko style, was really good and reminded me that that they can be really ambitious if they try. Even now though the Sam-Gates thing bores me. Get back together and have done with it!

I have unreservedly enjoyed the return of the old characters. The episode with Mark Green, Romano and Weaver was terrific. Looking forward to Ross and Hathaway next week! Maybe they are relaxing and having a little fun with it now.

ER lost me when it got all preachy - remember the series when Dr Carter went to the Congo?

TheMysticMasseuse · 03/05/2009 20:51

no i don't remember that series because i slept through it

it was boooring. carter was boring...

i loved dr lewis, mark green, romano, dr ross of course, some of the old old ones like dr dell'amico, malucci etc.

of the recent ones i liked pratt until he became all softie saintly, and i really like morris.

the nurses have always bored me to death, even (blasphemy!) Carol, esp Abby (i hate her!) and Sam... i always felt that Chuni should have gotten her own storyline though!

I haven't manage to raise the enthusiasm to watch this series yet although I have sky plussed it.

purpleduck · 03/05/2009 21:11

hmmm, and I thought the other nights episode was totally pointless...

And why get rid of everyone, just to introduce a bunch of new characters that no-one cares about? I can't even remember the new interns names.
And yes, the whole Sam/Tony thing is tedious. I will shoot my TV if they fall into each others arms in the last episode.

I do still love it though

TheMysticMasseuse · 03/05/2009 21:20

yep esp Angela Basset, what's the point of her? have you noticed how she never gets to do any actual medical stuff? i think she can't even say "15grams of epi" or "he needs a central line!".

BigGitDad · 03/05/2009 21:32

Well I have watched it all the way through and I have always enjoyed it. It was brilliant in the beginning as it was fresh and it has changed the way you see medical dramas on TV now. Sure the standard has slipped abit but that is to be expected in a long running series. One of the silliest endings I thought was when that one armed doctor was killed by that helicopter. I mean what was that all about? (He was a great character though)
Good to see the old faces come back,it gives the show a nice send off.

Poledra · 03/05/2009 21:34

OK, Angela Bassett is not convincing as a doctor, but does nobody else watch thinking what a strikingly handsome woman she is? She is just incredible-looking!

seriouscase · 04/05/2009 00:30

Did Ramano not lose his arm in a helicopter accident? Surely did not die in a helicopter accident too? if so the helis were really out to get him.

bruffin · 04/05/2009 00:44

Yes Romano lost both his arm and his life to a helicopter

I always enjoyed ER from the beginning, it was one show that was bigger than the characters, not many other shows could withstand losing characters their main characters.

TheMysticMasseuse · 04/05/2009 08:36

she is very very beautiful but has a strangely disturbing, fat neck... i can't focus on her face because i keep trying to look at her neck...

me, i love Archie Morris and so glad he's found a hotblooded woman to take caer of him!!!

OP posts:
bigchris · 04/05/2009 08:44

oh yes I loved romano
the annoying characters for me are Neela, Alex Kingston, the blonde intern girl who used to be in Dawsons Creek (Hope?), Neela's husband
I loved Eric Salle he was fab

TweetleBeetle · 04/05/2009 08:53

Nooooo! How can you say anything against ER?????

OK so maybe its not quite as good as it used to be be, and the whole Abby thing did becone a little tedioius, but there have been some fab characters - Morris, Ray, Neela, DeBenco(?).

The show has always been bigger than its stars.

I for one will miss it and am loving seeing some of the old characters returning

seriouscase · 05/05/2009 11:24

Bruffin OMG I either missed that or had blanked it from my memory! I feel a bit weird after watching that LOL!
ER is a great show, end of.

vintagevavavoom · 08/05/2009 21:48

cant believe im posting yet another message about er ...this serious is great and even the last couple of seaon which i thought were quite poor are really enjoyable when watched again it is so slick compared to the dire casualty and holby city have to admot i really liked abby even though she was awee bot of a moaning face scored the most gorgeous man in the world grrr

bea · 08/05/2009 21:49

just started to watch this last season as i was a huge fan during the good old days of mark greene and carter etc... all i can say is... what the hell happened to the opening titles!!!!?????

TheMysticMasseuse · 09/05/2009 07:19

vavavoom... luka WAS gorgeous about 10 years ago, i think now he's just a bit creepy with his dyed hair and that gloomy face of his (in fact, better gloomy that smiling- he's got a sinister and slighlty pervy grin...)

bea, i agree the credits were great... 's all ending anyway... sobbing sobbing...

Think Carol and Doug should have known it was for Carter, but it was good to see them still together and happy - how sad am I?

glitteryb6 · 14/05/2009 22:03

ok missed a bit at the end tonight, did Neela go off to be with Ray or was it another wee flashback/dream bit?

PfftTheMagicDragon · 14/05/2009 22:10

The show might have been bigger than it's stars (that's the point, after all, in an ensemble drama) but it certainly wasn't bigger than the terrible writing and storytelling that has gone on these last few years. Poor character development - bad guy turns good, (Clemente, Simon (so shit a character I can't even remember his last name), Gates) - man falls in love with Neela (everyone) - more and more disasters, less and less patients.

I have seen the finale and I thought it was wonderful. Back to what ER used to be. Good drama, and shock! lots of patients and the doctors being doctors. It's a shame that they managed to get it together again right at the end. I loved ER and have watched it from the start, but it should have ended a few years ago.

NeedaNewName · 14/05/2009 22:32

Nope not a dream, she went to Ray!

glitteryb6 · 15/05/2009 10:08

yay!

ellceeell · 15/05/2009 12:32

Was he surprised or was he expecting her? I couldn't make my mind up.

Fimbo · 15/05/2009 12:38

I have taped last nights, but like last weeks with George and Co.

Does anyone remember Jeanie?
