Cbeebies - Alex and Cerrie's comedy links

Right, I get what they're aiming for, but it's extremely surreal, and a bit like watching students doing improv exercises.

They clearly have thought about it all because they have all the props 'Lunch or No Lunch' and the really wierd 'Alex-as-Suzy-Sweet' one from a few weeks back. hris and Pui had a similar little set up, but it amused, rather than baffled me...

I'm trying to work out why they come across quite the way they do - any ideas?

Um, Chris and Pui, obviously...

Yes! Alex looked like a man in drag (not that there's anything wrong with that, but not necessarily what I expected to see when switching Cbeebies on with bleary eyes one day).

Very strange...

PuppyMonkey · 24/04/2009 12:35

There's something about that Alex that seems to have my dd2 age two mesmerised. She keeps asking me where he is all the time (eg last night at 11.30pm when she woke up crying) and when we were on holiday and no CBeebies was available, she was muttering about him. And Mr Maker too.

LastOrders · 24/04/2009 12:39

@ PM junior!

I find them quite cringey to watch.

Alex especially. Not sure why but I think it's the expressions on his face

PuppyMonkey · 24/04/2009 12:44

I agree Last, I think both him and Cerrie are TERRIBLE presenters. Wooody, woody woody!!

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro · 24/04/2009 12:53

Well, yes, there's still a bit of wooden-ness, but it's more the nature of the sketches that has me scratching my head.

Having just watched the intro today, I think it may be as simple as it not being scripted.

Chris Jarvis is a writer as well as a presenter, and even if things misfired, they generally had a punchline or something.

Alex and Cerrie just come across like there's been a brain-storming session of "Wouldn't it be funny if we did something like 'The Antiques Roadshow' but for Cbeebies related things" and then didn't think any further than that to actual jokes.

I don't mind them so much, but they are Not As Good As Chris And Pui.

Pui was always so intense and absorbed, it was as if she was playing herself and would have been even without an audience, whereas Ceri and Alex are much more self-conscious.

DH says he can't watch them because they are so smiley they remind him of student Christians.

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro · 24/04/2009 12:56

Kathy, you're not wrong. I'm reminded of really embarrassing improvised street evangelism, actually.

Yup, I think it's the ill-executed improvisation that's killing it stone dead.

I find Alex's smile really unnerving. I think they're trying too hard.

MollieO · 24/04/2009 13:03

I've tried really really hard to like them but I can't stand them. Every evening I see them I moan about it to my ds. He started off saying that Chris and Pui were busy because it was Christmas, then he said that they were away on holiday. Now he says that Pui is poorly and Chris is looking after her. 'Don't worry mummy, they will be back soon'. I wish.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 24/04/2009 13:36

I just looked on Wikipedia and apparently Chris and Pui's new show will start some time in May

I have a soft spot for Alex's excessive smile because I had a boyfriend who used to smile like that in public. Sadly it was because he had severe depression and was trying to hide it. Hope that is not the case for Alex.

LastOrders · 24/04/2009 17:19

I bet their faces ache once the camera stops rolling.

Though they're not quite as bad as the Milkshake presents who DP says "looks like they've just finished a shift at Spearmint Rhino"!

PheasantPlucker · 24/04/2009 17:30

I hate them.

Hate them, hate them, hate them!

LOL Lastorders 'Spearmint Rhino'!

puffling · 05/05/2009 00:02

Replace them with any of the Milkshake presenters. I just don't like them. Having said that, dd's not bothered and it is for her I suppose.

beardydad · 05/05/2009 07:53

Did anyone see their (A&C's) Welsh Dinnerladies sketch? Big glasses and wigs. Eww.
You leave the Milkshake girls (and Derek) alone!

LetThemEatCake · 08/05/2009 23:08

okay, someone needs to fill me in.

I was away for 3 months over Xmas/NY and missed the departure of C&P

never liked Pui, I must admit.

BUT:

Is it true that there was an uproar over Cerries exposed arm-stump (sorry if this is a terrible way to describe it)

Have C&P only been ousted in order to give them a new, bigger, role on another Cbeebies show?

Does anyone else think that Cerrie is a bit like Olive Oil? A bit droopy and wet?

izyboy · 10/05/2009 21:07

Student Christians yes! That's it!

KayHarkerInTheBackOfTheQuattro · 11/05/2009 16:40

They did a funny one this morning! Well, I tittered at Alex reading the 'Cbeebies news' and only wearing the top-half of a suit, and just wearing boxers under the table.

If in doubt, recycle Morecambe and Wise gags.
