Dandi · 15/04/2009 16:00

obsessed here too...

still reeling about Kima getting shot

not seen last night's yet (hurrah for Sky +) but it's not looking good.

the reactions of the other detectives were so convincing

sazzerbear · 15/04/2009 16:02

ah yes, we are watching last night's tonight as well! Poor Kima. Loving McNulty!

OP posts:
Dandi · 15/04/2009 16:10

McNulty, oh yes

as a character, though, he is a bit of an arsehole, don't you think? when he told his ex-wife he still loved her I had to shout at the TV 'but you only love yourself!' I never normally shout at the TV

sazzerbear · 15/04/2009 16:12

I know, he is somehting else, what about getting his kids involved in tracking down that bloke?! And shagging the lawyer at any opportunity - dirty dog!

OP posts:
Dandi · 15/04/2009 16:26

I'm also worrying about Bubbles - he was doing so well staying clean and now Kima won't be around to get him the bedding he wanted - will he relapse?

sazzerbear · 15/04/2009 16:29

Yes, Bubbles definitely heading down the slippery slope again!

you know there's a load of english actors in it?
macnulty being one. he's an etonian who then went to Trinners over here in Dublin so we're claiming him as one of our own.

Dandi · 16/04/2009 12:51

which other actors are English?? would never have been able to tell

they are showing series 2 next aren't they? [suffering withdrawal symptoms already]

geekgirl · 16/04/2009 12:53

Idris Elba, the actor who plays Stringer Bell, is from Hackney!

geekgirl · 16/04/2009 12:54

btw Dandi, all the series are out on DVD and are mostly very cheap. Lots of available 2nd hand... I don't like waiting ages between episodes either.

mayorquimby · 16/04/2009 12:56

stringer bells from hackney
mayor carcetti is irish

and i heard that there a disproportionate amount of the junkies/ minor drug dealers who hae from these shores.

that's what makes the brothel scene so funny when macnulty is doing a british accent.
he does it really really badly and it's a bit of a tongue in cheek moment about an englishman playing a yank trying to do an english accent.

mayorquimby · 16/04/2009 13:01

also if you like the wire, try to get a hold of the mini-series "the corner"
many of the same actors and made by the same people.
it's based on the book that also inspired the wire (a year on the killing streets) and is the reason why they decided to try and make it into full length series.
like the wire it is depressingly beautiful at times but it's focus is more on the way in which drug addiction affects a family and the wider community.

Dandi · 16/04/2009 13:10

thanks for tip re The corner - will check it out.

Stringer Bell is from Hackney I like his character, strangely. So funny when he was talking about elasticity of demand in the prinitng shop.

what brothel scene? I need a warning if McNulty is going to take his shirt off again

mayorquimby · 16/04/2009 13:12

oh theres a scene in one of the series, 3 maybe, macnulty has to visit a brothel undercover as an out of town business man and adopts a very very "apple and pears" oliver twist cockney accent.
also stringer bells character is awesome on that we can all agree.
the acotr who played him has just joined the cast of the U.S office and he's very good in it

mollythetortoise · 16/04/2009 13:20

i love The wire, just finished season 3 and going to get season 4 for dp's bday in two weeks time. My fave is Stringer Bell think he a much more convincing lead gangster than avon barksdale who just doesn't seem smart enough to me. I heard mcnulty (the actor - name escapes me) being interviewed on five live a couple of weeks ago and he has a very posh accent IRL. At the end of season 3 on the dvd, there is a Q&A session as an extra, Idris has a typical london accent and had ALOT of female fans in the audience. Watch out for Marlo too in season 2/3 - he is great character. would say more, but don't want to spoil for those on season 1.

Dandi · 16/04/2009 13:22

may make effort to watch the US Office now. only seem to have time for 24 & the Wire.

my all-time funniest bit from Series 1 so far is when Bunk & McNulty are working out how the girl that Dee killed got shot and they only say f*! for about 10 mins

Iklboo · 16/04/2009 13:25

Just watching season 1 on BBC2 and we're hooked. Season 2 not being shown until mid may but I farking LOVE it.
NO SPOILERS PLEASE!!!
I knew Stringer was English - he was in Ultraviolet TV series a few years back with the lovely Jack Davenport

mimsum · 18/04/2009 15:53

the "f*" scene is inspired - as is the scene where D'Angelo's explaining "gangsta" chess - that was the point at which I became hooked ...

Dandi · 19/04/2009 11:07

the "gangsta" chess scene was just fab, wasn't it.

I related this scene to a friend to convince her she should start watching the show, but I don't think I really managed to convey the brillaince of it! didn't sound as good in a cafe in rural North Yorkshire
