it's mad they're all so young

smurfgirl · 24/03/2009 21:22

Yes I am, its very sad isn't it. Makes me wonder about whether the prison should be so nice - if only to help keep the girls out of trouble.

brimfull · 24/03/2009 21:23

I know

aww right mate?

can't bear that accent

OP posts:
Sidge · 24/03/2009 21:25

How fucked up are they?

So young and yet so damaged.

(Feeling a sense of irony that Holloway has far better facilities than the military bases I have lived on...)

brimfull · 24/03/2009 21:26

christ-something's wrong when they don't want to leave

OP posts:
southeastastra · 24/03/2009 21:26

it just seems to house alot of drug addicts

southeastastra · 24/03/2009 21:28

we're failing all these kids, locking them up isn't the answer

southeastastra · 24/03/2009 21:29

or is it? last week a few of them used it as a detox clinic

brimfull · 24/03/2009 21:30

maybe we should just throw away the key
they love it in there

smurfgirl · 24/03/2009 21:31

Most petty crime is drug/alcohol related though - including muggings. Most drug users are driven by needing money, and its a constant need and a hard one to get round...

A friend is a nurse in a (male) prison and most of the inmates are addicted, some come in without adrug problem and develop one while they are in there

It makes me sad that they can't see any more than life in prison - that three meals a day and bed is enough

Sidge · 24/03/2009 21:32

I know this is a contentious one but I think that prison is too easy.

What sort of deterrent is it for them? None that I can see.

brimfull · 24/03/2009 21:35

I agree sidge but they must have such crap lives

OP posts:
southeastastra · 24/03/2009 21:37

they're so young, it's so depressing

Dozymare · 24/03/2009 21:40

they seem to prefer being inside that in the real World. That is a very sad thing. no wonder they re-offend.

brimfull · 24/03/2009 21:41

such a lot of fucked up kids

I could never work there..too depressing.

OP posts:
Sidge · 24/03/2009 21:45

I know, ggirl, I know, they are so damaged and have so little worth improving themselves for. I don't think making prison horrendous would necessarily improve the outcomes for them. I don't know what the answers are, but at the moment so many of them seem to view it as a form of Butlins.

Sidge · 24/03/2009 21:46

My mum was a prison nurse for a while but had to leave as she found it so demoralising.

brimfull · 24/03/2009 21:46

he just said it

they have all just come through traumatic childhoods.

god how depressing a thought

OP posts:
brimfull · 24/03/2009 21:47

I used to be a mental health nurse and I too found it soul destroying.

OP posts:
Hulababy · 24/03/2009 21:50

Many offenders (male and female) express the opinion they don't want to leave - sadly for lots of people prison is safer and easier than their life on the out. At least they have a bed and regular food inside.

cascade · 24/03/2009 21:51

I just settled in bed to watch this and sat up in shock. A girl I used to teach is in there.

brimfull · 24/03/2009 21:52

god really?

OP posts:
smurfgirl · 24/03/2009 21:52

I couldn't do mental health nursing. I have to say that my friend only lasted 6 months in his job as a prison nurse and is just moving to ICU for a new job.

I had an addictions placement and it was very difficult.

I think its hard moving them so far from their families when many of them seem to come from poorer families who maybe don't have cars or the money to buy train tickets.

LastOrders · 24/03/2009 21:56

I used to work in the prison sector.

It was a known guarantee that 80% of the girls released would be back the following week

Its where they feel accepted and like thay have a place in society.

I've beed in Holloway once for a drop off and it was the scariest place I've been!!!!

brimfull · 24/03/2009 21:59

god that was depressing
