Did anyone watch this last night, it's one of the saddest things I've seen in a while.

yup, mother in denial. Why did the father not step in more I wonder?

Dropdeadfred · 13/01/2009 14:29

i despised his mother - i felt sorry for her about the loss of her first son but i hated what she was doing to her second son.

the father did not appear much in the documentary did he?

TheDevilWearsPrimark · 13/01/2009 14:30

It reminded me of the fat girls and feeders programme. I wonder why the hospital allowed her to discharge him, surely they have a duty of care? I could have screamed at the tv when she was serving up those burgers to him.

I do hope he has a happy ending.

I did wonder why if in the US young people are not an 'adult' until 21 why his mother could not be prosecuted for abuse??

LightShinesInTheDarkness · 13/01/2009 14:51

It was a terrifying problem - mostly because the mother did seem to have some insight into what she had done to him.
The worst bit was when she gave him a hot dog as his first meal after his discharge.
Psychologist was very interesting when she said that the relationship obviously met needs in both of them.
Scary, scary.

Astarte · 13/01/2009 14:54

Dh was of the opinion that if he lost 20 stone by being in the rehab facility, surely he could lose the other 20 stone as well.

It was GB'ing he needed it was a supervised lifestyle and continuous education about food/exercise.

I was shocked at the hotdog as his first meal home. Even when she described his post op diet they never mentioned fruit!!

Lulumama · 13/01/2009 14:56

yes, watched it

father seemed conspicous by absence

mother did gain some insight into why she was doing it, but after 19 years, unable to simply stop feeding him

and he was totalyl unable to say no

really unhealthy co dependent relationship

hope they were both able to move forward

she is overcompensating.. things do become clearer

TheCrackFox · 13/01/2009 16:29

It was the saddest programme I have seen in long while. She treated him like a toddler, and he allowed it. The mum had so little insight into the fact that she wasn't part of the problem but was actually the problem.

I also found it bizarre that the dad didn't intervene more. He was like this distant peripheral character in the family.

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/01/2009 16:32

i watched this and felt so sorry for the boy

the mum made him leave hospital early, and he couldnt even walk to his house

over feeding is abuse

and even once he had his operation, mum gave him a turkey hot dog

he needs fruit, veg and lean meats, not a hot god made from the grissly bit of meat that people wont eat, all ground up!!

HecateQueenOfGhosts · 13/01/2009 16:32

She did treat him and talk to him as though he was a toddler, didn't she?

I think if he DOES get to a normal weight and has a life (and a girlfriend!) she is going to be a NIGHTMARE!

Can you imagine having her as a MIL? you'll never be good enough for mummy's likkle soldier!

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/01/2009 16:38

least he got away from mum at end of programme

i was hoping we would see him at 14stone

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/01/2009 16:40

watch here

nailpolish · 13/01/2009 16:41

his mum didnt make him leave hospital

he went against the drs advice and wanted to go home himself

the dr cant make him stay - if he wants to go he can

Blondeshavemorefun · 13/01/2009 17:00

oops thought mum presuaded him to go early

vjg13 · 13/01/2009 18:16

It was so sad. I felt the Mum had some insight but didn't know how to change.

I only watched to the end hoping for a positive update. It was awful when she bought all the crap shopping and then a giant takeway on the way home.

duchesse · 19/01/2009 12:37

Dear god. This was so sad. The mum is blatantly barking in need of some serious psychological assistance.

FairLadyRantALot · 21/01/2009 16:12

I saw a few bits of the programme, and the mother certainly knew what she was doing and that she was actually putting her son into danger

Poor Lad....of course he would rather be at home than in Hospital where he would be on a strict diet...
the mum was definitely abusing him...

hippipotamiWantsToLoseAPound · 21/01/2009 21:28

Only saw snippets of this. How did it end?
