During eprisode one I defended it madly to DH who said the scrpt was crap and the editing made no sense.

Now I am thwoing in the towel. It is too silly. The angelica chatcter is gorgeous and the best thing in it...but its completely unrealsitic that any of the men would have seen her as an equal.

And Oliver cromwell cannot hold his accent. Don't care how great he is on the Wire!

I was prepared to give it a go as well but after Episode 2 I am wavering. It's too bodice-rippery. You'd never believe Peter Flannery hada written it - it's more like whatsername who wrote The Other Boleyn Girl.

Andrea Riseborough (Angelica) has an amazingly seventeenth century face.

you are right. it is bollocks, it took me two episodes to work it out too. probably because it looks so nice and that woman is so beautiful I was slightly distracted from the crap dialogue.

I never even watched one minute of it as soon as I saw the title, sounds like a Mills and Boon Novel.

I watched it because Caitlin Moran said it was good. I had to persuade my dh to watch it, citing Caitlin as a reliable reviewer. He won't fall for that one again.

I also wanted to like it and perservered for about 30 mins and then gave up .

Yeah, but Oliver Cromwell was a farmer's (?) son from Cambridgeshire so he would have a regional accent.

Actually I have no idea if that's true but he wasn't posh & came from East Anglia...

it does get a lot better -altough there is a slgiht mills and boon elemetn to it. but hells teeth its cold, I'm tired and can't be bothered to concentrate.

agree that its odd to think that same guy who wrote our friends in teh north wrote this.

I don't think it's too bad - it's good drama if not historically accurate.

I think it lost its credibility when Angelica chose to get nakey with Mr Beardy Do-Good rather than have a romp in the woods with dirty John Simm.

I fell asleep midway through the first episode. looks like that was a smart choice.

Don't get me wrong PP, it's entertaining all right, just all over the place & a bit daft.

They do wear nice boots , and Angelica does look like a portrait by Van Dyck - my lodger loves it but (sigh) I've given up. Too many plot inconsistencies, and I don't actually like any of the characters very much.

And yes, Cromwell (and any other of the non-London nobility characters) should have more of a regional accent. Even in Victorian times, I've read somewhere that most of the members of parliament had strong regional accents.

I LOVE the 17th century - it's my period of choice - but this is too Mills & Boon for me .

I'm resurrecting this thread because I recorded it when it was on More4 a couple of weeks ago and watched the first two episodes last night and I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! Can't wait to kick dh upstairs tonight and watch the rest of it. I do agree with the poster who said Anjelica was mad for turning down the romp in the woods though! The King is so awful - can't wait for him to get his head removed and I was delighted when Harry got his comeuppance (though I admit the manner of it was rather unexpected)

I enjoyed it. It does make me want to read history books to seperate the fact from fiction!
