Surprisingly, Nicola does have a child, see here. I say 'surprisingly', as you rarely, if at all, hear her mentioning him, although maybe that could be down to editing.

I'm not surprised about Carly going, she didn't have a lot to say for herself. DVD reminds me a lot of a certain actor who boldly goes where no man has gone before. He also, apparently, doesn't endear himself to the likes of George, for instance.
