Stephen Fry - how bad is this USA series?!

All the gratuitous ivs with pretty, naked boys

The featuring of places that have been done to death (and done better) before like that brothel.

The cursory minutes spent in some states.

The unilluminating choice of story, Ben and Jerry's in Vermont? Yawn.

So depressingly uninteresting.

There seemed no real reason to make the series at all, certainly no real passion on Fry's part.

yawn

yes agree with you there, what was that stoopid wild west re-enactment all about and the daft spy games idiots, couldn't event
act

GrapefruitMoon · 10/11/2008 11:24

It reminds me of those anecdotes of Americans visiting all of Europe on one trip - "if it's Wednesday it must be Belgium" sory of thing!

procrastinatingparent · 10/11/2008 11:26

Was hoping for something more insightful, tbh. Enjoying the outdoor scenery, though.

ipanemagirl · 10/11/2008 11:30

shoulda done better, he's no idiot, chould have made something really special if he'd spent more time

It went from so-so to absolute random rubbish didn't it.

The two minutes spent in some states (look, more snow) then Fry moaning about sheep's vaginas to sum up Wisconsin (thanks for that, I feel as if I've been there myself now), then the bizarrely extended section with that tedious Las Vegas spy re-enactment.

Truly mind bendingly naff, from a man I'm sure most of like/ love enough to give any benefit of the doubt.

Please let it be the fault of editors and producers. I still love Stephen Fry!

DumbledoresGirl · 14/11/2008 12:49

The body farm will live with me forever though.

I know, it was shockingly boring, especially coming from him. Crap idea to start with doing it in such a cursory way and having to spend 10 mins or something on each state, but they really went for ALL the most cliched and obvious things. Like if you went to yorkshire and went to a flat cap factory, interviewed a bagpiper in scotland, quick trip to the tower of london and to cornwall for a cream tea.

I gave up when he went with those deer hunters and wouldn't even shoot a deer so it was all just standing around in a wood making awkward conversation. Pants.

snowleopard · 14/11/2008 12:57

It's not as if America isn't fascinating either. We really could do with an intellectual and insightful investigation into US culture.

Wizzska · 14/11/2008 15:18

It is dull isn't it. And I hate to think Stephen Fry is being dull. Too much to do in so little time and the Taxi idea is just naff. Mind you I downloaded one of his podcasts and that was boring too. Is QI a scripted fluke?

DumbledoresGirl - The body farm bit was a bit odd to say the least.

snowleopard · 14/11/2008 15:40

That new history of scotland on BBC though with Neil Thingy - fantastic

malfoy · 14/11/2008 15:43

I have found the series frustrating. It could be so interesting. There are states we will never go to but would love to see.

Love Stephen Fry though.

CrushaGrape · 14/11/2008 16:06

The series has generally been pretty poor, but the episode last week was the nadir - so much time spent on the spy game with the Chippendales, the brothel and the Mormon photoshoot, all of which were spectacularly boring. There has been so little insight, although for some reason I have persisted in watching it; hoping that suddenly something interesting will happen I guess.

The BBC4 tie in will hopefully be much better. www.digitalspy.co.uk/tv/a97117/fry-to-offer-thoughts-on-usa-for-bbc4.html

I like it and so does DH... - in a sort of cosy Sunday night pottering way, I think it is entertaining and Fry himself gently witty. Oh dear, maybe we have it all wrong!!

FuriousGeorge · 14/11/2008 17:40

I'm really disappointed. It looked so promising, but is dull as ditchwater.I've travelled aroubd the states quite a bit and there are so many places that he could haver visited, but didn't.Wisconsin is beautiful, but he went to look at sheep there-sheep look pretty much the sae the world over

FuriousGeorge · 14/11/2008 17:41

sorry for the coddish typing-have poorly dd on my lap.

tillyblue · 14/11/2008 17:42

Totally agree. I thought he could be an interesting perspective on the States but cor blimey it's dull.
