i found myself not liking her this week (apart from the baby dying) because it seems to me that she doesn't help herself at all. As soon as she arrives she starts pissing the other milkmaids off and its only because they are nice that it doesn't turn into the same situation as at the big house. Why did she have to be such a drama queen about telling him her secret and then ended up not telling him anyway, either tell him or shut up about your past fgs.
And its slightly unbelievable that the first two jobs she ever has ends up with the bloke falling in love with her.
Saying that I missed Alec, he is so much more fanciable than Angel.
Really enjoyed it though and can't wait for next week, its even worth having to sit through the Charlie Boorman programme first.

"And its slightly unbelievable that the first two jobs she ever has ends up with the bloke falling in love with her."

Yeah I was thinking that too Teddycat. I was wondering if it's because she has that noble ancestry which combined with her apparent country girl purity makes her an irresistable combination to any hot-blooded Victorian male. In which case, is there an underlying snobbishness in the whole plot?

poppy34 · 22/09/2008 17:02

been ages since I read the book but the bit that seems to be missing is the idea that tess is someone who is a victim of fate/time.... came across much more clearly that these two blokes she met were pivotal to her life ... think tv series is qutie good as bringing out the victim in her

LIZS · 22/09/2008 17:10

Can't warm to it tbh . It has been eons since I last read the book but even so it doens't brign out the tragedy enough for me or the parallels (the cart rides etc). And the lighting is too dark, can't see the action (or maybe that is our itv!) Angel Clare too schoolboy ish

poppy34 · 22/09/2008 17:13

agree re angel clare - he was a charmless nark in the book and they've brought that out here

wintera · 22/09/2008 18:33

I'm sure its not too strange for 2 men to fall in love with Tess is it? Especially when she looks like that! She is very pretty! Blokes do really seem to be into Gemma Arterton don't they? I've heard her being discussed on loads of tv progs and on radio and she seems to be THE next up and coming star. The new Keira maybe? Except she actually has tits and doesn't have a body like an ironing board!

belgo · 22/09/2008 18:36

Alec isn't really in love with her though is he, he's just obsessed by her.

I found sunday's episode a little boring. I hope it's better next week.

poppy34 · 22/09/2008 20:25

wintera and can also act.. was a bit but really like her in lost in austen now.

Agree was a bit slow - think this was the filler episode to get it to 4 parter

JimJammum · 22/09/2008 21:06

I haven't read it and so had to look at the back of a copy in the library to get an outline of the plot (I like to know what's coming). It's good, but just going to be relentlessly depressing.....rape, baby dies, love of life will leave her when he finds out about both, no happy ending for girl as Hardy didn't do them. I like a happy ending, so might have to stick with Austen.....

2Eliza2 · 22/09/2008 21:09

I love it. I think it brings out the beauty of the book. Gemma A. is good, I think.

Tinker · 28/09/2008 22:10

Oh dear, came over quite faint at Alec's "I will have you". I know it's wrong

morocco · 28/09/2008 22:16

if you want a happy ending from hardy, try under the greenwoood tree. much gentler.

wintera · 29/09/2008 10:46

My friend is watching this at the mo but doesn't know the story. She said "Does it get better for her?" I said "fraid not love, it just gets worse!"

But at least its not as depressing as Jude. In last night's episode Tess was happy for the first ten minutes!!

Joking aside though, I am really loving this adaptation I must say.

OrmIrian · 29/09/2008 10:49

I had to inform DH that last weeks episode was the only one that was even vaguely happy. And it's all downhill from now.

They fall in love with her because she's beautiful.

teddycat · 29/09/2008 12:55

me too when he said that Tinker
and she still doesn't help herself i think shes a bit pathetic really, I was expecting someone more fiesty like maybe Scarlet O'hara. I have never read the book mainly because it is my mum's favourite book ever but she always said it was quite depressing - agreed.

boogiewoogie · 29/09/2008 16:25

I think it's Hardy's fault rather than Tess's
though. Get annoyed at him. How can anyone have the worst luck in the world?

boogiewoogie · 29/09/2008 16:26

It's Hardy's fault not Tess's. Get annoyed at him for giving her the worst luck in the world.

belgo · 29/09/2008 16:28

I started watching this week's episode but had to turn off as it's just too depressing.

LaVie · 29/09/2008 16:44

Why did her baby die? I turned on the repeat on sunday and she was holding it and it was crying and then next scene, the baby is dead?!

Felt very sad for her when she buried it outside the church grounds

teddycat · 29/09/2008 20:57

i think he wouldn't feed but i missed it too and thats what my DH said happened so don't quote me.

Monkeytrousers · 01/10/2008 23:05

"And its slightly unbelievable that the first two jobs she ever has ends up with the bloke falling in love with her."

It's becasue she's fucking gorgeous. That's a major point.

teddycat · 02/10/2008 14:18

well there's her problem them, no basis for any lasting relationship.

Monkeytrousers · 02/10/2008 16:47

Her problem?

I don't get this, sorry.

Can someone be a bit more explict?
