New respect for Duncan Ballantyne

He takes on tobacco on Beeb 2 tonight. He investigates the marketing of tobacco to children in Africa.

He goes to the BAT AGM and shows what scoundrels they really are. Including Kenneth Clarke who was in fact Sec of State for Health from '88 to '90. No conflict of interest there then.

Anyway, Duncan was great. He's actually quite attractive too.

He looks and sounds a right twat.

WinkyWinkola · 01/07/2008 22:04

Big up Duncan. Did you see the prog, Expat? He was articulate and interesting.

I read an article about him the other week

He is a self-made millionaire (from working-class roots, natch)

Bought himself a second-hand ice-cream van and voila...

Says he won't be leaving his kids much in his will

Gives LOADS away to charity

Seems a decent bloke to me

Cammelia · 01/07/2008 22:07

I detest him

Tillyboo · 02/07/2008 08:58

Hmm, I think you may change your mind if you read his Biography. He's an amazing chap who has done amazing things. Doesn't matter what he sounds like or looks like does it ?

He is an incredibly inspirational bloke who has encouraged and inspired people to achieve things they might have thought out of their reach or ability.

A true entrepeneur ...

As notnowbernard say's, a very decent bloke indeedy.

WinkyWinkola · 02/07/2008 09:19

Even if "he looks and sounds like a right twat," at least he appears to be trying to make a difference. There's not a lot of that about.

TheMadHouse · 02/07/2008 09:22

Expat - My accent is somewhat like his

expatinscotland · 02/07/2008 13:30

did I say it was because of his accent?

no, i didn't.

it's my opinion and i'm not alone in that.

big deal.

Tillyboo · 02/07/2008 13:31

Here we go again ....

expatinscotland · 02/07/2008 13:31

exactly, tilly.

expatinscotland · 02/07/2008 13:32

he's insipirational to you.

not to others. others don't feel the same.

why is that offensive?

UnquietDad · 02/07/2008 13:34

He comes across as a bit of an arse on Dragons' Den, as if his money gives him the right to be completely arrogant. I much prefer Richard Farley, who will tell people clearly and politely what is wrong with their idea if he doesn't like it.

Iklboo · 02/07/2008 13:39

Remember curse of editing! He might say loads of constructive stuff that gets cut cos he's been 'cast' as the mean one.
I remember him weeing himself laughing at that chap's exercise chair

WinkyWinkola · 02/07/2008 15:52

Well, I guess when he gives loads of money to charity and makes TV programmes highlighting the illegal marketing of BAT in Africa, it's kind of weird and OTT to hear him being called 'a right twat'.

But if giving lots of money to charity and trying to expose multinationals for immoral behaviour isn't inspirational, then I can't think what is.

Can you tell me?

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 02/07/2008 15:54

I disagree with how you feel about him, WW. I don't like the guy. Donald Trump gives loads to charity and I don't particularly find him likeable, either.

But I don't get offended and het up if others disagree.

WinkyWinkola · 02/07/2008 15:55

Who's het up? I wasn't the one calling other people offensive names.

And Donald Trump is not likeable, you're right, but perhaps inspirational.

OP posts:
ChopsTheDuck · 02/07/2008 15:55

wasn't it him who offered a guy a job too?

I think he is great. Watched that other programn with him in recently, investigating how much wealthy people do actually give to charity. He funded an orphans home, and plans to leave £500 million to charity. He is an inspiration.

expatinscotland · 02/07/2008 15:59

Oh FGS! It's so offensive, twat. How long have you been here? Give me a break!

WinkyWinkola · 02/07/2008 16:03

Blimey!

OP posts:
Cammelia · 02/07/2008 20:10

I would start a thread called No respect for Duncan bannatyne

I'm with expat

DB is a complete twat

WinkyWinkola · 02/07/2008 21:58

Oh.

What do you call people who don't give money to charity then?

Twat is an offensive word btw. If you were called twat in RL, I think you'd probably take umbrage.
