I'm looking for advice on suitable TV shows for children.

I'm looking for recommendations that are low stimulation, calm, ideally with some sort of educational value (opposite of CocoMelon).

We currently have Netflix and Amazon Prime.

I'm also looking for something for when our grandchildren come to stay. Something that's not frantic, a good adventure story. Advice please?

how old are the children?

Babayagahaha · 16/10/2026 20:20

The BBC adaptations of Julia Donaldson books on iplayer are lovely.

Latenightreader · 16/10/2026 20:21

How old are the children? My daughter loved Numberblocks (still watches it on occasion) from toddlerhood.

Is Old Jack's Boat still on iplayer? That was lovely. I also enjoyed Molly and Mack.

Bluey is a firm favourite still, as is Shawn the Sheep, and both are watchable as an adult.

MCF86 · 16/10/2026 20:28

numberblocks is excellent, we get 5 year olds knowing square numbers because of it 🤯

I really liked Bluey, Paddington, Something Special (despite Mr Tumble - I think the representation is really important) all on "normal" tv/catch up. Pip and Posy is also ok.

She's currently 2 months old. My mum asked me to create a list of shows she's allowed to watch when she's older.

I've literally only gotten TV subscriptions so my mum can watch her dramas so no idea what's on TV nowadays. I've added some David Attenborough, Batman the animated series and the few episodes of Mister Rodger's Neighbourhood to the Watchlist but so far that's all.

There’ll be new stuff out then op, I don’t think you need a list yet!

MCF86 · 16/10/2026 20:30

oh. Daniel Tigers neighbourhood. It annoyed me but was very gentle and the little songs did come in handy when the big feelings started to show up!

Not sure why I got deleted. It's a strange request for TV shows for a 2mo baby. Screen time isn't OK til they're 2. If my mum asked me this I'd be worried about her. Hope everything is OK OP.

This post made me laugh 🤣. Oh Op, if this is real, you don’t need to worry about it for quite a while!

By the time it's ok I'll be back in the hellscape known as work and too exhausted and chronically depressed to do the research so I'm doing it now when I'm still in good spirits and have time to do set up a watchlist.

Assuming you are going to work when baby is 1,have you seen the research around screens, and under 2s?

MotherOfCrocodiles · 17/10/2026 07:18

Ok, here are ones I would recommend that I think actually help them with some aspect of development and/or are nice and calm

age 2 on-
Bing
Daniel Tiger
tellytubbies
moon and me
clangers
Julia Donaldson short movies

age 3 on-
Sarah and Duck
octonauts
bluey
peter rabbit

age 4/5 on
numberblocks (cannot recommend this enough)

bing and Daniel Tiger are annoying but do social stories for toddlers and have some good jingles and catch phrases (I do t know how many times I’ve repeated “balloons don’t last forever” and “you gotta try new food cos it might taste go-od!”)

MotherOfCrocodiles · 17/10/2026 07:19

Oh and Kiri and Lou, that’s lovely.

SatinHeart · 17/10/2026 07:24

Most of Cbeebies is not too bad so I'd recommend iPlayer. A lot of the kids stuff on netflix and Prime is dire.

MotherOfCrocodiles · 17/10/2026 07:25

I don’t really agree with no TV for littles, it’s about quality. Most of the ones I recommend model social interactions and dealing with feelings in a positive way. Octonauts and Numberblocks are incredibly educational whilst also loved by kids and adults.

Maainly, just avoid the short attention span stuff like you tube and cocomelon (argh! Unless you need your kids to sit still like a zombie for hours for a particular reason in which case, go cocomelon!).

Yes, I've said the Julia Donaldsons are nice.

Just making you aware that you're 2 years ahead of yourself.

Don't you need a TV licence for that?

You want "ow stimulation, calm, ideally with some sort of educational value" and you have Batman on your list?

Yes but a TV license is cheaper than most subscriptions, especially if you have Disney and amazon.
