I am puzzling over an episode of Miss Scarlet and the Duke (on U) in which the characters end up in an abandoned prison in Woolwich. I had never seen this episode before, yet this location was familiar. Not visually but somehow as an idea. I simply cannot place where from. Radio 4 Extra, Paul Temple or the like, Dr Who? I am completely befuddled and curious as to why two different writers should use the same setting.
Can anyone help unfuddle me?

There is no abandoned prison in Woolwich. The tv location scouts have chosen Wicklow Gaol for this series (according to Google) and it is used in other dramas too, as are similarly classical Victorian designs where the focus is on narrow corridors and isolation in small single cells. It’s likely the design appears familiar as a resonant ‘ideal’ of this type of location.

Would you rate this series?

Thanks. The plots of both episodes claimed to be in Woolwich, or, in the case of the one I can't place, somewhere else along the south side of the Thames east of London. I map things in my mind when I hear them and that can last longer than other stuff. And can be very irritating when the source doesn't respect geography/ Dan Brown's London in the da Vinci Code, for example.

Miss Scarlet and the Duke I like. It's basic premiss is silly, a Victorian lady detective trying to carry on her dead father's business, but it addresses the diverse society well, The Duke is an officer Wellington, who learned his trade under her father, and can't advance due to the higher ranks being ex military. It's light, set in Holmes' London with races and class distinctions, plus period misogyny. There's a long story arc about her father;s death. Lovely Georgian town houses, a bit like Greenwich, I don't watch it for the sort of serious character development and sad family damage of Vera..It's enjoyable.
