I've just watched both series of this and I'm so sad it's over. What a fantastic series and so interesting, Dermot is so engaging on it and he's a cracking cook. It really is one of the best things I've seen for a long time. The scenery the people the food, just an Incredibly well done production. Any body else watched it ?

I hadn’t heard of it either. I’ll look for it now, thank you @HexInductionHour.

I haven’t seen it. But what makes it different from or better than all the other similar TV series — Anna Haugh’s Big Irish Food Trail, Neven’s Irish Food Trails, Donal’s Irish Adventure, John Torode’s Ireland, lots of Rick Stein? There are just so many!

HexInductionHour · 22/09/2026 12:52

@Cartouche ive not seen the shows you mention. I'd say it was not wholly cooking focused, this forms a small part of each show, Dermot cooks a dish at the end and will meet a chef, or a grower that will cook. It goes into history and it is more of a delve into the growing food culture in Ireland and the farmers, growers and producers of unusual foods you wouldnt necessarily associate with Ireland, though of course there are traditional Irish foods. It is really interesting I thought, he tours the entire Country so lots to see and learn

@Cartouche also booze involved! I never knew that whiskey gets it's colour from the charred oak barrels and the distillery in the former Crumlin Road jail is just magnificent! Dermot gets hands on activities in every episode, really it's a wonderful series that I have personally learned a lot from. Lovely warm and cosy afternoon viewing. I thought it was wonderful

Dermot is a great ambassador for Ireland. He genuinely seems to love the place. I think his parents emigrated to the UK.
I hate the expression “plastic Paddy”.
Those children of emigrants are as Irish as they want to be.
It wasn’t their parents fault they had to emigrate as the country was on its knees economically back in the 30s, 40, 50s, 60s, 70s and into the 80s.
There was no real availability of birth control - thank you Catholic Church - and big families were the norm with few jobs available.
Generations lost to emigration. 😢

@Banjas his mum and dad are back there now, in Wexford, his dad is in episode 1 of the series and they play with Wexford Curling team, it’s lovely.

they go into that a bit, in the series, that the country will never recover on a population level, but so much positivity also for example the resurgence of the whiskey industry.

Why will the country never recover on a population level? It’s growing steadily, and higher now than at any point since the immediate aftermath of the worst family years.

I saw a couple of episodes of his series a while back, the one in Wexford and I think the one in Cork, I really enjoyed it.

HexInductionHour · 23/09/2026 08:32

@Cartouche oh not sure really, it was possibly about the rural areas, it was just something said in one of the episodes.

I agree @Cartouche
The population has grown hugely in the last couple of decades.

He is, one set of grandparents were Irish and his mother grew up in Ireland though born in the UK.

Rondayvu · 23/09/2026 11:48

I just had a look - if you are in the ROI it says -

'Episodes stream on ITVX which generally requires a UK IP address and a UK TV license/account'.
(guessing the mention of the licence is if you wanted to watch it when it was 'Live' broadcast)

disappointing 😔
