Is it my ears or is her voice not what it was?

I bought a Rufus album back in 1977. Loved her since!

QueenOfHiraeth · 13/09/2026 00:07

I glanced in but turned off as she sounded so screechy it was hurting my ears.
Didn't realise her age though as she looks amazing

i’m just home from it and Chaka Khan was bloody awful! She managed to clear half the arena by the time she was halfway through! With her opening songs she killed the atmosphere in the place stone dead and it had been a brilliant vibe - never seen a headline act manage to do that!

Not just my opinion, anyone you spoke to said the same

That's such a shame, the ' Chaka at the BBC' programme after on BBC 2, showed her voice wasn't great around 10 years ago on Jules Holland as well

It really was a shame-she just wasn’t a good headliner-her set was very self indulgent…there was a bit of “no Scotland no party” going on in the crowd and she had a go at them about that!
Alexandra Burke came on as a special guest and she was really good though.

On my way back for day 2!!

weebarra · 13/09/2026 09:11

I was there too, she really wasn’t great. Lots of people left during her set. I think she mimed a lot. Alexandra Burke was great (despite never having forgiven her for murdering Hallelujah!).
It was a great day though.

Were Texas just the best, as usual?

Samewrinklesnewname · 13/09/2026 09:44

@socialdilemmawhattodo

They absolutely were! First time I’ve seen them live since I was a student in the 80s😂

QuintessentiallyScottish · 13/09/2026 11:57

The deafening silence when she mentioned the Chaka Khan musical was a bit awkward. I'm not surprised to hear so many left.

tigger1001 · 13/09/2026 12:01

I'm so surprised the way they did the line up. Texas and Decon blue deserve to be much higher billed, especially in Scotland.

Samewrinklesnewname · 13/09/2026 13:52

Deacon Blue have just been FANTASTIC

RubyBuzz · 13/09/2026 15:54

Chaka ruined the mood to what had been a fab day. Texas or Script should have headlined. Chakas set was totally self indulgent!! Left early!!!

I think Texas often go on first as they are such a crowd pleaser. Gets everyone up dancing and excited.

@socialdilemmawhattodo you might be right -same with opening with Deacon Blue today-it just gets everyone in the mood

Deacon Blue should be headlining, imo, not being used to boost the audience for others. I can't imagine Appleton would have had anywhere near the crowd they got from following Deacon Blue, if they'd been first.

I agree. Texas would be as amazing, if not better, ending the show, as opening.

But I must look at Deacon Blue, not a band I know, and they sound great.

Romeiswheretheheartis · 13/09/2026 18:22

Level 42 are sounding quite ropey though.

Samewrinklesnewname · 13/09/2026 18:40

They’ve just announced a tour to celebrate 40 years since they released their first album. Absolutely brilliant band, I’ve seen them so many times over the years

I'm really hoping to get tickets

I watched some of yesterday's offerings on the TV last night, there was a noticeable difference in the in-tuneness from Saturday.

Chaka Khan's voice has already been mentioned but I even wondered about her backing singers, who are often in many gigs like this the ones who keep it all going, sounding ever so slightly out on occasion. I thought the same of Sharleen Spiteri, there was something not quite gelling in the bits I heard.

It's often the case watching gigs like this on television and I wonder if it sounds better in person but last night Appleton, Simple Minds and Deacon Blue (the bits I saw anyway) were all in tune. The only thing of note with DB was that it sounded like Lorraine McIntosh's voice didn't sound as strong as it used to, or perhaps she was turned down a bit, who knows.

I was there too and agree with others . Watched some of the footage on iPlayer and CK actually sounded better on the tv .
Agree with her being so self indulgent , as were Appleton too ( but not to such a large extent ) and they made a real effort . When you are playing at a festival - even if the headline - you really need to play your hits . The crowd were so up for having a great time and she didn’t really give them what they wanted . You can get away with a few new songs , one seemed quite good , but you really need to play your hits as the audience isn’t there just for you .

Lulu is 77 so 4 years older and she knew what the audience wanted - her hits . She had some good chat and seemed to enjoy and be grateful to be there . Not a big fan of hers - but she was great .

Simple Minds totally delivered as a headline set - come out on a big hit , finished on one , play your big hits and the audience were happy to listen to some of the new stuff .

Accoustics were an issue a few times , but I suppose the age of some of the singers was also a factor as their voices weren’t understandably as powerful as when they were decades younger .
I really don’t think the purpose behind the headline set is to clear the grounds as quickly as possible ! I did stay until the end , but was noticeable some had left and the audience didn’t love her .
