James chicken fingers Martin

Does anybody else watch James Martin’s Saturday Morning TV show and notice how he never washes his hands with soap after handling chicken? Like today for instance, he coated his chicken in cornflake breadcrumbs and then just rinsed his eggy, chickeny hands in water for a few seconds, without using soap.

In fact it seems he never really washes his hands properly after touching any meat. He always wipes his hands and the work surfaces with a tea towel, regardless of if he is touching meat or veg or salad.

He also has a really dangly bracelet which dips into batter and sauces 🤢

He has earned the name James chicken fingers Martin in our house. I don’t know how the guests eat the meals when they see this chicken finger behaviour.

Am I alone in thinking this?

Wow! What is the story behind this? What did he cook you?

Did you have your cholesterol levels tested afterwards? He uses SO much butter.

Lomonald · 12/09/2026 12:28

I think his thing he was frying this morning was for demonstration purposes but he absolutely should be seen washing his hands!

lorn195 · 12/09/2026 12:30

I have seen him live on stage (twice) and he is very non-pc when he is cooking on stage as well, think loads and loads of butter and much of the above.

In fact he does make it part of the show which to be honest is refreshing. I‘m sure that working in his proper kitchen it’s very different.

Lots of people seem to think a splash of water will clean, but you need soap!

PallidSausage · 12/09/2026 12:33

No. If he's so keen on 'teaching' people about food being on the telly then the occasional glance in the direction of hygiene should be considered.

I agree, see also wiping meaty fingers on dishtowels 🤢

He’s doing a presentation where he’s cooking. No one is actually going to eat the food?
if you can’t work out for yourself that you need to use basic food hygiene when actually making your own Food, that’s on you!!

PallidSausage · 12/09/2026 12:44

He is mostly cooking for guests who have to be seen to at least taste the food. Some will eat more than others, naturally, but it isn't thrown out as soon as he's finished his demonstration.

Yes! And also ‘just a slosh of oil’ and it’s loads 🙈

What I want to know is where he is from because he never mentions it.

I read the title and had to open the thread to see who this James Chicken is who fingers Martin.

There will be editing and pre prepared food I think.

For a minute I thought you were serious, and was about to say! I may have had a teeny tiny crush on him since we hugged after a ready steady cook in York 😍

Tvradiorentals · 12/09/2026 13:32

I agree with the OP. Likewise about Matt Tebutt on Saturday Kitchen Live. Their hygiene standards leave a lot to be desired. Handling raw meat then giving hands a 2 second token drizzle under the tap without soap before handling cooked food and salad stuff. I often wonder if that’s their level of food hygiene in front of the camera what must it be like behind the scenes in their restaurants. Fair enough if it was just for demo purposes but both of them serve up to studio guests 🤢

Was it Patsy Kensit who took one mouthful and then pushed it away, perhaps thinking they'd already gone to the ads? Maybe she was thinking along the same lines as some of us.

NotSoLittle · 13/09/2026 20:19

Haven"t watched it for a few years, but I remember back then someone bought it up and he said there was soap/soap dispenser in built into the tap.
