Hello! Is this worth to a watch? Reviews seem good, just looking for more general opinions?

Very good but slightly harrowing

BEAchDays2 · 15/08/2026 13:32

😬 That’s good to know!

Yes, I agree. Good but very dark.

It's kind of the reverse of the feelgood, warm glow, everybody accepted kind of vibe you get in most mainstream drama about gay people. Thus, thought provoking.

Mum2Fergus · 15/08/2026 13:35

It’s brilliant…though I still get emotional thinking about it.

DuckyLuck · 15/08/2026 13:38

So so good but prepare yourself for a harrowing watch

OhBotherSaidPoo · 15/08/2026 13:39

It's dark, and very watchable.
I did find the writing pretty poor and none of the characters had any real depth, it was very reliant on stereotypes and that was it. None of the characters were given anything more than face value which I found a real shame given the nature of the subject.
The only real character who had some nuance was the gender realist who was met with eye rolls by the gays.
A real missed opportunity here.

afaloren · 15/08/2026 13:39

I found it devastating.

Darkenmydarkness · 15/08/2026 13:42

It’s a hard watch but brilliant. Morrissey and Cumming give fantastic performances.

ginasevern · 15/08/2026 14:16

I found it watchable and largely enjoyed it (if enjoy is the right word) but the characters were all very stereotyped. Also all the gays and trans were depicted as thoroughly lovely and insightful individuals without fail. And I know the writer had a message to get across but I felt the script drifted into overly preachy territory.

I've seen it.

The epilogue with the 'what happens next' is an odd choice to make with a fictional piece; I've only seen it in docudramas / based on real life.

Acting was good, especially from leads and there is an absolute tonne of social commentary on all kinds of issues - masculinity/ loss of identity and pride through insecure work/ gay culture and its many forms / misinformation/ family relationships / online porn harms/ lad culture/ social media harms - it had a lot to say and most of it was relevant - just maybe too much for one mini series.

I thought the female characters were poorly drawn though, the male characters were generally better.

Worth a watch though - lots to talk about.

Thanks, sounds right up my street!

I agree to an extent about how all gay characters about from Alan Cumming and Melba were depicted as being lovely and cheerful.
What I said on the last thread that I liked that the actress who played Ruby in Waterloo Road was critical of Alan Cumming’s character and talked about the hostility and contempt some gay men have for women, which I thought was refreshing.

Yes, I had forgotten about that. It was refreshing and unfortunately very often true.

BEAchDays2 · 16/08/2026 11:27

God it’s good. On episode 3

I wish Melba was developed more.
Could have been a great character.

I so agree. He had the potential for great depth but it was all a bit lost.

BEAchDays2 · 16/08/2026 20:53

Oh yes, I love Melba! Only on episode two, so can’t speak much more broadly at the moment.

It’s done, so harrowing. But so important, there are so many people that should watch this, perhaps particularly some people on Mumsnet…
