Yep, it is a hallmark production and I bet Channel five can’t wait for the same old Christmas movies to go on.

readingmakesmehappy · 28/08/2026 21:08

@SummerNocturnal I think it's a problem Apple have with a number of their shows. Ted Lasso and Shrinking shouldn't have had a s4 and nor should For All Mankind.

fundamentallyauthentic · 28/08/2026 21:48

Shrinking has faded a little but it’s still funny and mostly well-written. Acting is fabulous. It’s returning next year for series 5, as is The Morning Show (also excellent).

SummerNocturnal · 29/08/2026 01:53

Series 5? Wow.
Bill Lawrence never knows when to stop.
Same with Cougar Town.
Characters become saccharine, cliches or rinse and repeat.

SummerNocturnal · 29/08/2026 02:02

Edit: Shrinking was filming its fourth season not fifth. The 3rd season just felt like the fourth 😉😂 The fourth one apparently has a time jump to try and reset/reboot it.

I fell asleep halfway through Ep 4. It’s dreadfully disappointing - boring, repetitive, superficial. And with such a stellar cast, too!

After Season 3 (and the series) finished I was happy. Great ending. Done.

Then when whispers of another season started I was dead against it.
And I was right.

It is absolutely cringe.
I don't know what happened to the characters (Rebecca) but I see someone above posted that the writers have changed?
And what on earth is Tracy Ullman doing?

Such a depressing depiction of professional women athletes.

I also saw somewhere that a lot of American words were creeping in.
Watched last nights episode-the word clique-how many times did they say "click" ??
It is "cleek"

It is so off-putting in its entirety. Have found nothing redeeming after loving the original and watching the whole thing more than once!

DH has already given up but I feel a bit like it's like a train wreck and I can't look away.

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 29/08/2026 17:32

It’s always had the odd Americanism - “parking lot” was one that stood out!

RunningJo · 29/08/2026 18:50

On the stupid bit with Trent and Sharon, Trent reminded me of the character Caesar Flickerman in the Hungar Games.

fiveminutestochill · 14/08/2026 06:08

@SeditiousPamInteresting, I didn't see it as money trouble on Rebecca's side exactly, but more feeling a bit trapped between supporting women but not wanting to spend loads/lose money doing it - which will probably cause tension with Keeley.

@the80sweregreatI know what you mean about Rebecca... though tbh I probably feel that way about most of the characters. Even Ted.

Doe anyone know if Rupert is in it? I know Anthony Head (RIP) passed away recently but assuming they would have finished filming by then? They need him to counteract the sugar.

Edited

No he is not, unfortunately.

Whelmed · 30/08/2026 11:18

I still find the show funny at times but the women's team is almost irrelevant to the plot now. I just don't care whether they win or lose or whether the whole team just gets cancelled because there's not enough money. None of the players characters are getting any proper storylines or background, they're just extras.

SeditiousPam · 30/08/2026 11:40

It’s just a shame for Tanya Reynolds, who cannot help being excellent in everything she does. The show is letting her down.

OP posts:
saraclara · 30/08/2026 11:42

Exactly. There's not a single member of the team that I've been able to tune into as a character. In fact right now I couldn't even name one

RightOnTheEdge · 31/08/2026 15:55

I really wanted to love this and thought it would get better as it went on and we got to know the new team but I sadly agree with everyone else.

I couldn't care less about Roy and Keeley anymore and Roy going all those dates was just terrible and pointless.
He should have moved on and gone out with Phoebe's teacher. It's like season 3 with Keeley and her business, it took up too much time and I really didnt care. I just wanted more of the team.

I was really uncomfortable with the "whore" comment! I thought I'd heard wrong and rewound it, it was so jarring and seemed so out of character with the show.

My dd plays football and was really looking forward to this but she was so disappointed with the clique thing. She's played in a few different teams and said she was never seen anything like the split between defenders, midfield and strikers. She said of course they make the women look bitchy and childish!

As for the debacle with the kit, that was so cringy and pathetic we could hardly watch.
As dd said people already think women's team are a joke and then they send them out with kits bedazzled by little girls and she said why do they have to make Tracy Ullman's character look like a stereotypical unhinged manhater?

saraclara · 31/08/2026 17:02

Yep. It's as if they've taken every sexist, negative trope about women, magnified them all to caricature level, then thrown every single one into the script.

I can't get my head round the fact that there were women on that writing team. WTF were they doing?

SummerNocturnal · 31/08/2026 21:42

No idea and it is so bizarre, given it's the same team of writers pretty much and not far off an even split in the writing room

Writers
Season 1 Jason Bill Joe Jane Jamie Brett Leann Phoebe Brendan 4 women
Season 2 Brendan Leann Ashley Joe Bill Brett PhoebeJamie Joe Jane Sasha 6 women
Season 3 Leann Sasha Bill Brett Jamie Brendan Phoebe Keeley Dylan Chuck Jane Joe Jason 6 women
Season 4 Joe Leann Sasha Sarah Phoebe Dylan Jane Bill Jamie Brett Jack Julia Brendan Jason 7 women
I don't understand it. Women can often write women well (think of the Motherland/Amanda land team) and there's usually safety in numbers/a team on it who know the characters well.

Maybe it's different if the women are writing through the lens of American culture in 2026.

restinginpjs · 03/09/2026 13:38

Just watched the latest episode, it was equally dire. The representation of women is plain awful.

DuncinToffee · 03/09/2026 14:06

The Delia Smith moment was very predictable but I quite liked it.

restinginpjs · 03/09/2026 21:21

@DuncinToffee aaah yes, that was quite funny

Trainstrike · 03/09/2026 22:14

I liked the Delia bit and also laughed out loud at the Virgin Atlantic pilot joke.

opaltimer1 · 09/09/2026 20:57

Enjoyed today’s episode

readingmakesmehappy · 09/09/2026 21:13

Jason Sudeikis is wearing a lot of make up this series

StillCreatingAName · 09/09/2026 23:40

I can’t believe how dire this season is, I’m so sad that the cringe factor is so high per episode and the portrayal of women’s football is so negative- I’m still uncurling my toes from the bar brawl ‘story’. Where’s the humour gone? Where’s the storylines?

Keeley is like nails on a chalkboard for me now too- S1 Rebecca would not stand for the parody CMO antics.

Slight glimmer came with the return of Ted and Rebecca biscuits (finally) and Roy’s dating scenes which gave me some hope for future eps, let’s see…

fretaway · 10/09/2026 13:27

I don’t understand how it’s the same writers but it has just turned out so poorly written.
No character development for anybody, old or new, the team is just a bunch of 1 dimensional characters. New coach seems to be a point of focus but they don’t seem to develop her at all and she is frosty with no apparent explanation.
The football scenes are dire, it might be the way it’s shot but surely they can easily get some decent footballers for the game scenes!
Tracey Ullman’s sole purpose is to be as annoying as possible.
They could have made this really good with a clean slate but alas no.

DuncinToffee · 10/09/2026 13:43

Last night's episodes had good bits in it, especially Jamie Tartt but the way they keep portraying the team is just bad.
