I am a long term user and know there is a TV section, but I'm posting on here for the wider issue.

I have already seen this series and it really pissed me off first time round, but I've just watched episode one again because of being in my early 40s and I'm 'starting again', and Oh My God. How awful is that bloody man even from episode one? She is an absolute angel to deal with it the way she did (yes, I know it's not real, but it does actually happen).

I have no real reason for posting other than I wanted to express my outrage at shitty men. Why would you do it the start of a holiday then seem confused why they are upset and don't want you to sleep under the same roof!

Rant over.

Perhaps I should move it to TV chat 😂 Could this please be moved? Thank you!

I love this series. I also just watched it. He is an absolute twat, typical man who can't cope with adult life. I liked the teacher, loved the neighbour but wanted to kick her best friend and the neighbors daughter very hard on the shins. The best friend was a dowdy, dreary emotional drain who wasn't even loyal to her. The job was the best thing that ever happened to Maggie, the team building trip episodes were brilliantly done. They didn't know it at the time but it they are all so delightfully 90s ❤️

Yes the teacher was lovely and the new job was so good for her! But yes, there were some pretty annoying characters, and just the way the husband was was infuriating.

Do you know of any similar programmes?

Hearts and Bones on you tube is brilliant!

the80sweregreat · 23/07/2026 19:10

It is very good. I know it’s old, but it was a real drama and showed the bad side of a break up.

Jerrybalanitis · 24/07/2026 20:59

@NameChangeForThingsThatMakeMeRage also you might like Mistresses if you haven't already seen it, 00s but really good

My DD and I watched it last year and loved it. Totally agree though. What an infuriating cockwomble he was. No way could I have been as nice as she was. Her mum wasn’t much better but I love Anne Reid so I forgave her!

I grew up in Harpenden and went to school in St Albans so watched this for familiar places spotting. We enjoyed the first season but it got so very bad, very quickly. The acting was just dreadful. Caroline Quentin pulled faces in lieu of any acting, and Alistair Armstrong was unbearably out of his depth, even for this.

the80sweregreat · 28/07/2026 21:33

I really liked this , it was never going to win awards, but it was fun and had some interesting characters.
I liked her teacher boyfriend!

Hito · 28/07/2026 21:39

No spoilers please. I started watching it tonight. It seems pretty real so far.

It must be at least 25 years old!!
Surely a bit late to start dictating no spoilers 😂😂😂

I haven't seen it ever!

I watched this fairly recently and enjoyed it. Yep, the husband was an absolute knob.

It made me a bit nostalgic for when TV was quite easy-going. Also love it when she has been shopping and pulling out all the old products with the packaging of the time.

Pure nostalgia.

the80sweregreat · 28/07/2026 21:54

The first episode with her trying to do everything and him behaving so badly really resonated. The first series was well written.

Agree. I didn't watch it until recently and I still thought it was relevant. I was a teen when it first came out so wasn't interested then!

OMG, watched this a few months ago and loved it. Vaguely remember it but was a bit young the first time around. Always love anything with CQ but thought the acting was great all round.

Didn’t realise but Jeff and Helen got married in real life afterwards! Later split though. Paul Thornley also went on to narrate the early series of Britain’s Busiest Airport which I’ve been watching lately - he’s got the perfect voiceover voice.

Jerrybalanitis · 01/08/2026 15:32

I have just started Blue Murder. It is good so far, single mum DCI pregnant and a muddle of a home life. The only graye is CQ being made to do a northern accent. Just ruins it. Still worth a watch though

Bristolandlazy · 01/08/2026 15:34

I enjoyed it. It was easy watching and interesting to see how things were then even though it's not that long ago

the80sweregreat · 01/08/2026 15:41

I thought it lost its way a bit by series three , but the first ones are good and shows a break up realistically I think.

Jerrybalanitis · 01/08/2026 15:46

I bloody love this thread ❤️❤️❤️

Edited

I did not know they got married afterwards!

I did not know they got married afterwards!

According to Wikipedia, they had a daughter in 2007, married in 2013 and divorced in 2017. So presumably they got together during or just after the series!
