Did anyone watch it?
I have no interest in football, but watched both parts last night

I've not seen it yes as we were out over the weekend but I saw the stage play it is based on.

DuncinToffee · 26/05/2026 09:30

I have watched the first 2 episodes and really enjoyed it.

I am a football fan but could do with name labels on the players.

Mydogisagentleman · 26/05/2026 09:50

I think it's only two episodes.

It is very well cast - I'm really enjoying it. Some very funny moments and some deeply poignant ones. Off on holiday soon so will have to wait until we get back to see the last two episodes.

It's 4 episodes. Where have you got up to? They extended the play after the 2024 Euros.

SalmonofUnwisdom · 26/05/2026 10:30

I double checked on iPlayer this morning - it's definitely 4 episodes.

SwedishEdith · 26/05/2026 10:34

It's brilliant, I'm really enjoying it. They've managed to recapture the tension of games perfectly, even when you've already seen them.

Episodes 3 and 4 are next Sunday and Monday

I think it's only two episodes.

It's definitely four episodes, with two more to come. The play originally went up to the 2022 World Cup but it was extended to incorporate the 2024 Euros.

I don't like football at all but I love James Graham's writing. I thought it was excellent and Joseph Fiennes's impersonation of Southgate was remarkable.

Mydogisagentleman · 26/05/2026 10:51

Brilliant, something to look forward to.

Really enjoyed the two episodes so far. It’s uncanny how similar Fiennes looks to GS.
Only thing I would say is that 4 episodes seems a bit long. But it’s very watchable especially if you follow English football.

Comefromaway · 27/05/2026 10:08

Some changes to the play. The whole marines training camp was not in the play. In the play it was Pippa who suggested the Dear England letter and the scene where she says a few words to Rashford's nan happened straight after the Croatia defeat.

However I loved the imagery of the deflated unicorns. Really looking forward to the next two episodes.

Anyone still watching? I've watched at tv pace so final episode tonight.

I know it's a drama but I love the portrayal of Kane. If most of this is based on truth, what a lovely bloke.

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/06/2026 21:36

Watched the first one tonight, it’s absolutely brilliant! I always wanted to see the play but never got the chance and I love James Graham and will watch anything he does. Fiennes is astonishing, don’t think I’ve ever seen such a remarkable performance imitating a living person. And I’m not usually a fan of Whittaker as her suffering mum thing makes me feel so sad but she’s brilliant too so far. Really enjoying it.

agggtm · 01/06/2026 22:00

We have watched 3 episodes I think it’s really good. Well acted too.

SwedishEdith · 01/06/2026 22:05

Just finished. So uplifting (now about to watch Tip Toe so that feeling won't last). Loved the way the drama was interspersed with real footage. And it still captured the tension of the matches. Great stuff.

DuncinToffee · 01/06/2026 22:09

I finished as well tonight. The conversation with the German goalkeeper made me laugh, especially the Dutch enemy comment. I have had similar conversations with England supporters ( I am Dutch)

Really enjoyed it.

ShowOfHands · 01/06/2026 22:11

I don't like football at all but took my GCSE Drama group to see the play and thought it was well done. I particularly liked the way it captured those moments in time, weaving the social and political backdrop into the hopes and dreams of the players.

Is it much like the play?

friendlycat · 01/06/2026 22:42

I thought it was excellent. I still can’t get over the likeness of Fiennes and the adopted mannerisms of Southgate on top of the similarities in looks.

Comefromaway · Yesterday 00:05

i really enjoyed it but I felt that it lost some of the comedy present in the play. Little moments like practising singing God Save the King aftervtyecQueen died and some of the comments from political figures added humour.

I also missed the Stormzy soundtrack which fitted perfectly.
