I normally love Alan Bates so maybe I’m being too harsh.

I find the bit in his room where he does the salute bit pretty 😬.

i think with the way Altman used to direct films that it’s more than possible that Bates part suffers from being cut. But I am speculating.

My view is that Jennings (Alan Bates) was an alcoholic who never got his personal life together (indicated by his discomfort with the attention from Dorothy). So, like Elsie, he is very good at his job, but when it comes to their personal lives they are just as vulnerable as anyone else. And we see that again with Mrs Wilson (Helen Mirren) when she breaks down near the end with her sister.
