Mini series summer 1996???

Can anyone remember a mini-series which aired in summer 1996, possibly more likely August than July, which was set in (south west?) France?

I have the vaguest of memories of the actual series but it changed the course of my life as I made a key decision because of it and I'd love to watch it again

I think it was a thriller/family drama/love story.

I'm pretty sure the dialogue was in English and not dubbed but I can't remember if the actors were English or French. Pretty sure the characters were French though.

I have a feeling the story involved a young man (maybe an au pair type figure?) trying to help a woman in a coercive relationship?

Does this ring any bells?

Can only find a brief synopsos but pretty sure it's the right one. Details not quite how I remembered, but it was 30 years ago!
