Anyone watching the America’s Next Top Model expose on Netflix? Just watched the first episode, it’s quite compelling. I used to love it back in the day, what with Noted Fashion Photographer Mr Nigel Barker, the go-sees, makeovers, the two Jays, etc. Shame it seems things were a bit toxic behind the scenes (still gonna watch the whole thing though!)

Felt so sorry for Shandi and the filming of her black out drunk sex drama. She was so young. Cried for her!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 16/02/2026 22:04

The make overs were so intense..some got maybe a trim others their whole head shaved! All for the viewing figures i guess. Its when they got critised for their hair later on. Not their choice for that style

Choppychop · 16/02/2026 22:13

Yes the pulling of the teeth and the closing of the gaps - awful.

MouldyandScully · 16/02/2026 22:18

Just watched the first episode - I remember so much of this happening at the time. It really was a show of its time and I can see how problematic it is when viewing through a modern lense but my god I bloody loved this show.

Miss Jay was so fabulous.

LillyLeaf · 16/02/2026 23:08

I've watched 2 episodes and had to stop otherwise I would have watched the lot and it's late. I loved it back in the day but it seems so shocking now, those poor girls.

Choppychop · 16/02/2026 23:19

Tyra banks comes across really badly in this - surprisingly she’s a producer!!

burnoutbabe · 16/02/2026 23:53

I watched all 3 and did well
up during part 3. I think you’ll all know why when you get to it.

The stroke? That caught me too :( such a vibrant lovable person. It’s sad to see.

TheMateofOphelia · 17/02/2026 00:06

Watched the first two with a plan to finish tomorrow.

I loved antm and will defend Tyra to death. Although the theme of the doc seems to be nobody will take responsibility for their actions in what, in hindsight, was an incredibly problematic show. Not unique to ANTM of course and there's plenty of discourse about the lack of care in reality TV.

Nigel is still hot.

NooNakedJacuzziness · 17/02/2026 07:26

I remember how distraught Shandi was when she woke up the next day, she was sobbing because she had to tell her boyfriend what had happened. I think my absolute favourite was Natasha the Russian girl, who they all ganged up on - she was so positive and naturally funny (especially when they made her look like a male rapper!)

I only watched the odd episode of the show so was really shocked after watching the expose yesterday. I had no idea all of that, quite frankly, abuse went on. Those poor young women. You can see they are still traumatised.

Bricayak · 17/02/2026 11:54

I was a young teenager when ANTM started and loved it. Had anorexia from about 16. Looking back at it now I am not surprised! The Biggest Loser expose is interesting too, it’s hard to see the prevailing culture when you’re living through it but looking back it was so problematic.

FeelingALittleWoozyHere · 17/02/2026 12:05

Watched the first two and honestly it was all so toxic. I also shed a tear for poor Shandi. Tyra comes across awfully as do J Alexander and Nigel. The only half decent one is Jay Manuel. The body shaming was utterly horrific. Really feel like Tyra is trying to rewrite history with claiming she started the show to challenge and change the industry by trying to have increased body diversity etc. Whenever they did have someone who wasnt model skinny they were awful to them

Bricayak · 17/02/2026 12:09

I wonder if they were all so steeped in the industry they lost sight of normal. Plus the wider culture at the time was so body shaming. And getting Janice on it was a recipe for just nastiness. It’s horrible to watch back as an adult now I appreciate they were so young and vulnerable.

devongirl12 · 17/02/2026 12:15

Looking forward to watching this.

is there another one as well? One which Tyra isn’t involved in and is more revealing of what really went on?

im sure I heard there is.

I also saw Adrienne, the winner of cycle 1 (I think), on social media. She hates everything to do with it, is no longer a model, and seems to hate Tyra.

I always liked her. She was very no nonsense. Additionally, whilst I lived watching ANTM for the entertainment value, I always thought it was a load of crap and felt they picked girls based on entertainment value rather than modelling talent (fair enough) but wow they got it right with Adrienne. She did not look anything special initially, but she was absolutely nailing it by the end of the cycle, and now, in her 40s, she looks great.

Strangely, I think she now makes a living selling Avon.

MouldyandScully · 17/02/2026 21:21

Just finished watching all the episodes-

Tyra did not come across well. She seemed superficial, dodged questions and didn’t take responsibility for any of it or appear sorry for anything.

so strange seeing some of the former contestants, Bree looked so gorgeous.

And I cried for Miss Jay 😢

x2boys · 17/02/2026 21:51

Yes i binge watched it yesterday
I didn't really watch it at the time just the odd episode but it was a very manipulative show
They treated shandi terribly, she said she blacked out so couldn't consent to sex ,so she was raped
I read somewhere before the documentary makers are just there to film stuff ,but surely if your filming something as awful as that, you woukd be complicit in it if you didnt try and stop it t
Just how far would they let it go?

TheMateofOphelia · 18/02/2026 11:26

I watched the last one - which did test my love for Tyra tbh. I still think she was right about Tiffany though!

Mrs Jay ♥️ What a legend. And the friendship between him and Mr Jay and Nigel was really touching.

Nigel is so hot.

mondaytosunday · 18/02/2026 12:56

@FeelingALittleWoozyHerethey did have plus size models - Whitney Thompson actually won it cycle 10. Cycle 3 model Toccara Jones also did well as a plus size model. I actually thought many of the models weren’t thin enough for the industry.

Papercompany · 18/02/2026 19:24

I absolutely loved this when it was on...but even back then I could see some of the problems with it. Any time the girls spoke up for themselves in judging they were not listened to. And I hated it when they had to do near nude shots and were clearly uncomfortable. Some of those girls were only just 18.

I wonder this too, the modelling industry, reality TV and the conversation around weight were toxic and savage AF at the time; I am not overly surprised Tyra etc didnt see the issue. Not to absolve anyone of responsibility, but the context is relevant in judging i think.

Mamadothehump · 18/02/2026 20:16

I loved it back in the day but looking back now - wow! Poor, poor Shandi amongst others but she (imo) suffered the most. Loved Tyra at the time but agree that she now comes across terribly. Love the 2 Jay’s

NooNakedJacuzziness · 18/02/2026 21:06

I actually saw Tyra at an airport in America a few years back. A fan approached her and she was trying to pretend she wasn’t really Tyra. Not many people look like her though so she wasn’t very convincing!

Duckswaddle · 18/02/2026 21:56

I used to love ANTM back in the day but even as a 12 year old I knew it was brutal. As an adult now, it’s horrific!
All of the people involved in the show were horrendous, not just Tyra. Nigel and the Jays all joined in with the body shaming and bullying that went on of the models. All of them trying to avoid any accountability now.

But Miss Jay was, and still is, fucking fabulous.

Absolutely horrific

Like horrifying.

They gave tyra such soft ball questions she still comes across horribly.
