I’ve just finished watching this programme and it is such a comfort piece of TV.

I tried to watch it a while ago, but got bored in the first episode. I tried watching again and really enjoyed it.

I would love a MIL like Cathy. She is sooo calm, caring and respectful. So patient with her son and girlfriend.

The grandparents make me howl with laughter. So funny.

It’s a wonder that anything ever gets done because they all take so long to get out the house.

Great TV

Not seen it for a long time, but the brothers girlfriend and her list of what was acceptable made me laugh 😁.

chattyness · 21/01/2026 19:21

Love this show,it makes me laugh so much

Bishbashboom · 21/01/2026 19:22

Where can I re watch this?

Violetparis · 21/01/2026 19:24

I really like the son's girlfriend, reallh made me laugh. The only thing wrong with it is the awful theme tune.

Is it not still on iplayer ?

Yes, @Bishbashboom all 18 episodes are on the iPlayer for over a year.

And, I’ve just given myself a bit of a shock, series 1 episode 1 was May 2016 so almost ten years ago. How the heck did that happen?

MultiOwl · 21/01/2026 22:09

I remember and loved this - might rewatch it.

Chrysanthemum5 · 22/01/2026 09:36

@NoCommentingFromNowOn it was a shock to realise it was almost ten years old! I watched this the first time round and loved it so I'm delighted to watch it again

Cathy was so patient - probably too patient with that useless son.

The girlfriend, Kelly, made me tear up in almost every episode especially the one I watched tonight where her mum was being so horrible to her

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 22/01/2026 12:43

@Chrysanthemum5 I saw the actress who played Kelly in Film Club, she was unrecognisable!

mambojambodothetango · 22/01/2026 12:46

If you liked Mum try Pernille on Netflix - very similar, if a little grittier.

busyd4y · 22/01/2026 12:49

I remember the love for this when it first came out and I couldnt relate to it all. I just wanted to give her a good old shake and found the whole thing annoying

I wonder if it's worth my time to rewatch it now my children are older

Fingalscave · 22/01/2026 12:52

I love it, Lesley Manville is so good in everything she does. I think Kelly is hilarious but Derek's girlfriend is so absolutely horrible, she's brilliant.

Chrysanthemum5 · 22/01/2026 13:20

Yes Pauline is unbearable! Although she reminds me a lot of my ex-MIL so that may be one reason I can't stand the character 🤣

MiddlingMarch · 22/01/2026 13:28

I loved this, will need to rewatch it. Although still not quite over the initial shock of seeing Peter Mullan in sandals...

DecisionTime123 · 22/01/2026 13:35

I found this quite melancholy. The acting is brilliant, yes it's comic, but the way the Mum was treated I found quite sad. Also Lesley Manville looked quite young to be treated like an old woman; I watched it when it came out but I am now 63 and I DO get treated like that! (However I do look 73 so maybe that's got something to do with it!)

MadisonAvenue · 22/01/2026 15:43

I’ve rewatched this a few times, really love it.

One memorable and emotional scene was where Reg and Maureen were alone in the living room, she’d fallen asleep and Reg was dancing to Cyndi Lauper.

Middlemarch123 · 22/01/2026 15:45

Love it. “You melt me like butter “ was such a great moment.
And her in-laws, “We’re having bits” was so funny.

Fransgran · 22/01/2026 21:13

I love everything about this show. (I would also recommend Pernille btw) All the characters were played perfectly. I particularly liked Lesley Manville and Dorothy Atkinson as Derek's appalling girlfriend Pauline. I enjoyed the slow burn between Cathy and Michael and I thought the theme song was fabulous!

NoCommentingFromNowOn · 23/01/2026 04:02

There is a lovely scene where Derek’s girlfriend teaches a young woman how to knit, is it at a funeral? What are the details I’ve forgotten?
