…They’re now 70 something Shock

Something made me think of it tonight (maybe the whole unfortunate news about Timothy Busfield, maybe just thinking about glossy beloved ensemble series of today). I don’t remember there being anything quite like it on TV before that.

Mel Harris (Hope) has been married SIX times. Seems a lot.

God I loved that show. Rewatched it too about 15 years ago on one of my mat leaves and it has pretty much stood the test of time.

I remember it being really well written, though I was a little bit young for it. I remember another seismic shift when I found This Life a few years later - that was the first show where I felt they were showing my life. But the sheer glamour of thirtysomething, I did love it.

Funny @KidsDoBetter I rewatched it and found it terribly dated. I loved it at the time though and wanted to be them when I grew up!

Does anyone remember the campaign against an incinerator being built.
Hope got very involved.

I recall it from all that time ago.

At the time this first broadcast it massively influenced me. I had three very young children. I had to 'rescue' them from the incinerator being planned nearby.

I moved to another town because the local hospital where I lived were planning to build an incinerator. Thirty Something certainly made an impression on me!

Totally crazy now I look back at myself. That's what children do to us. (me)

I loved Thirtysomething, especially Ken Olin. I started watching Brothers and Sisters recently, from the beginning. His RL wife Patricia Wettig was in it, then he starred in it, and was also directing it. Their son and daughter were involved as actor or writer or producer. I watched all five series, and I really disliked most of the characters. I don’t think I would like any of them as friends, they were all so self absorbed. They were arguing every time they had a family meeting and I didn’t like Callista Flockhart’s mouth, when she spoke. I have strange likes and dislikes!

I watched Thirty Something when it originally aired. They were all my age and I was living in America at the time. I enjoyed it very much and it seemed very relateable to my own life. I rewatched it many years later and while, still enjoyable, I found the characters quite annoying - especially Elliot (Timothy Busfield) and Michael (Ken Olin.) The only likeable male character imo was Gary, maybe because he was a bit underused and then killed off. They never seemed to know quite what to do with him. I had a good laugh at some things when I rewatched, especially the old mobile phones. They were the size of house bricks and Michael and Elliott onviously felt very cool hefting them to their ears! I know all parents think their first borns are exceptional in every way but Hope was so OTT with Janey. Some girl friends and I were watching the episode where Hope says, totally straight-faced, to Michael, "Do all kids reflect light or is it just her?" We all choked on our Lambrusco.

I was a bit too young to appreciate it originally but fell in love with it the second time around. Loathed Elliot each time though, feel pretty vindicated now 🤭
