Every other resident of the household has mocked me. I don't care. I love this film and never pass up another chance to see Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood effortlessly outwitting the Third Reich for the umpteenth time.

I remember going to see this at the cinema with DBs when it came out. Happy days!

LifeIsTooFlippingShort · 10/01/2026 17:58

That music! I love it.

LifeIsTooFlippingShort · 10/01/2026 18:03

Also love The Great Escape and The Longest Day.

Well, it's all over now and guess what, it all turned out OK. Scarcely a scratch on any of them. Amazing. Grin

Is that where it comes from? Things you learn

Overtheatlantic · 10/01/2026 18:08

But then after using these code words one of them says “Colonal Tanner and I will stand by” or something like that lol. I mean come on!

hattie43 · 10/01/2026 18:20

Me too , I’ve just finished watching it . I like Operation Daybreak and The Train aswell .

Belindabelle · 10/01/2026 18:21

I have it on DVD. Watch it every year between Christmas and New Year. This year watched it in a double feature with my other favorite, Hero’s of Telemark.

hattie43 · 10/01/2026 18:21

Did you know Colonel Turner was the real life dad of Joyce Barnaby . Today’s useless fact .

That is an excellent piece of trivia. Thank you.

Guns of Navarone and Magnificent Seven were both on recently too and surprisingly watchable . .

hattie43 · 10/01/2026 18:44

Oh yes Guns of Navarone, another good one .

ACatAsleepInYourHat · 10/01/2026 18:47

Oh yes! Saw this at the pictures with my Dad. I always enjoyed a good war film - Battle of the Bulge and Von Ryan’s Express come to mind.

minsmum · 10/01/2026 18:50

Love all of these but also Tora Tora Tora, The Bridge at Remagen and the Battle of Medway

Belindabelle · 10/01/2026 18:55

Von Ryan’s Express. That’s another one for my list. Love that film

Belindabelle · 10/01/2026 18:58

The thing is they are all still so watchable. They were all released within a fairly short time of the war ending. I wonder if out children will look on modern day war films in the same way.

Belindabelle · 10/01/2026 19:00

Behind Enemy Lines is a, relatively speaking, modern classic.

soupyspoon · 10/01/2026 19:02

Yep me too, Im watching just for the acting to be honest

Kelly's Heroes was on just before this, did you watch that OP?

Middlemarch123 · 10/01/2026 20:03

My late mother’s favourite film, she watched it endless times. Think she secretly fancied Clint😁

Sorry, had to smile at the typo. I can’t imagine two big fleets fighting it out on the Medway.

Since someone’s mentioned The Magnificent Seven, I’ll just say that I think it’s head and shoulders above all the other films named. It’s one of the great movies of all time, IMO.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 10/01/2026 21:33

Missed Kelly's Heroes, @soupyspoon. May catch up with it, as I don't think I've ever seen it.
