Anyone watching Mayor of Kingstown on Paramount Plus?

It's not my usual thing. it's pretty violent, but it is well written and Jeremy Renner is fab.

I love it!

I love it too but it seems like an awful thing too! So violent, never a dull or peaceful moment.

Love love Mayor of Kingston! Just been renewed for a final 5th series, sad its coming to an end

CoastalCalm · 06/01/2026 10:24

We’ve watched it all and while the storylines are good and grim it does become very depressing viewing - I find myself looking for a tree in bloom or some sunny day , it’s all so gloomy lol

Conniebygaslight · 06/01/2026 14:16

It's incredibly well written.

krustykittens · 07/01/2026 03:45

All of the above are true. Yes, it is rather depressing and very violent. But I find the world it is portraying fascinating. A town where the biggest employer is the prison system and where most of the inhabitants are prisoners or ex-prisoners and the symbiotic relationship this creates between the incarcerated population and the free population. In the middle of it all, you have Mike, desperately fighting to maintain a status quo and have 'peace in the valley'. A man chained to the town because if he goes anywhere else, he's just an ex con, a white supremacist one at that. So many people in Kingstown can't seem to escape it, for one reason or another and sooner or later, the violent sub-culture they inhabit drags them under. And it taints everything. Look how the police seem to have their own rules when it comes to putting down a con they particularly despise or how the gangs get to the prison staff. You get glimpses of people trying to live a normal live and you wonder how they manage it. It is, as @Conniebygaslight says, incredibly well written. But I think Taylor Sheridan seems to take the despised industries of America and put them on screen. Landman is also fantastic. It makes a change from glossy people living glamorous lives in Manhattan, doing jobs no one understands for obscene amounts of money. Or lawyers.

Italiangreyhound · 07/01/2026 23:59

@CoastalCalm

It actually makes me feel better about my life. At least I'm not in prison!

@krustykittens

Yes, agree it is so well-written.

I also love Landman and Yellowstone.

I'm a bit less enamoured with Tulsa King. Not sure why.

Spoiler

Does anyone else feel there is a plot hole in Mayor of Kingstown Season 1? Did the prison service need to 'make a deal' with the prisoners to get them to kill the guy who started a fire accidently that killed a child?

Surely, the prisoners on finding out he caused the death of a 5-year-old boy might have attacked him anyway. And all the cops could have shot him in a botched arrest.

There could have been many causes of the riot. The cruelty of the guards, the food etc.

Anyway. I have now seen all episodes.

So what do I watch next!

Just finished it. I’m bereft. It’s honestly one of the best shows I’ve seen. I didn’t watch the gory bits as I’m squeamish but god I loved this show so much. Cannot wait for season 5.

Italiangreyhound · 09/01/2026 22:30

@PolkaDotPorridge

Yes, i loved it too.

I didn't want to.like it as it's very violent and the female characters are very limited. But, it is constantly loving.

Spoilers

I'm intrigued by Ian! The co-writer. He comes across as nice at the start but is he!

Spoilers

And how many people died because they wouldn't turn Raymond in!

Italiangreyhound · 09/01/2026 22:36

Robert!

Spoilers

I count 5 dead because they wouldn't allow Robert to be investigated truthfully!

I think the problem with turning Robert in, is that if it gets out who did it, they would have no future in the police and not just in Kingstown. Police ratting on other officers is MASSIVELY frowned on, you just don't do it. Insane, when you consider the problems this is causing but there you go. Ian is not a nice guy at all. I think the person with the most integrity in all this is Bunny. Yes, he's a drug dealer but he has his own code and his sticks to it, no matter the cost.

Italiangreyhound · 10/01/2026 21:16

@krustykittens
Yes I like Bunny.

But I also thought the three key women had integrity.

Mariam McLusky, Tracy McLusky. And Evelyn Foley.

But I also love Kyle McLusky.

I searched the actor who plays Kyle and as a teenager he had a brief part in the original Frasier comedy series!
