As per the title , for those that have ‘ binged ‘this and fancy a chat.
I am only on episode four so far , but it is very good.
I know it’s going to be regarded as ‘ woke’ in some quarters , but it has a lot to say and I do like Lee , what a fantastic natural actor and how altruistic he is too.
Makes a change from police dramas too ( despite being set in a prison !)

I couldn’t watch it, I found it unbearably depressing.

Im Just starting episode 5 & im really enjoying this show..I dont get the frustration over Dan's mum as his brother didn't want to talk about their dad either, they both suffered & tried to protect Dan from him.

it has a good ending

the80sweregreat · 28/01/2026 20:17

It did have a good ending ( for some of them) , but I am still worried that Lee may start to slip back into his old ways. I hope not , but children is a different pressure isn’t it.

yes Lee and his wife,
i wonder if the book deals with this?

Nosejobnelly · 02/02/2026 22:31

i thought it was excellent as well. Josh Finan was amazing.
i felt very on edge watching it though - was not comfortable viewing at all.

Yes, I agree. The weird background music that sounded like a record being played in reverse made it much worse for me. It was really jarring and grated on me every time they played it 😬

the80sweregreat · 03/02/2026 08:09

The music was edgy. It did have a sinister feel to it at times, probably to hi light his own feelings around leaving the house and how awkward he was with everyone.
Worst background music I heard recently was on the ‘one battle after another ‘ film and that’s up for a Oscar
That was even worse than the background music on this drama!

Jonny Greenwood’s score for One Battle was probably the best film sound I’ve heard in twenty years! And that’s even taking into account the Sinners film score.

I loved this series - but oddly enough I’ve already forgotten the sound world.

the80sweregreat · 03/02/2026 08:40

Cold, Ds 2 loved the score for one battle, but at times it was just a bit jarring for me. Good film though !
Sinners music was good.

I loved it as well - really well written and acted. The only false note for me was him saying that he was meeting Natasha for a drink at the end. There is NO WAY she would have wanted to lay eyes on him ever again after he endangered her son's life! Come on now

Another hard recommend for The Responder - Josh Finan is just great in it. Martin Freeman also brilliant, probably the best thing he's ever done

'Dan was interested in seeing the father even though no one else wanted to do and the pad mate said he was kind. It was nuanced and confusing like real life'

I found the conversation with his pad mate really unsettling. He was a v unpleasant character. I wondered if he was being deliberately cruel and toying with Dan by insisting that his dad never talked about him?

ColdHenrietta · 03/02/2026 08:59

Hmm … I suspect the son’s broken arm (not life threatening) would be secondary in her mind to the unforgivable awfulness of being put on the radar of social services. For a Black single mother who has carved out a decent life for herself and her son, to have that taken away forever by a heedless young white man …

I’d be very surprised if she could ever bear to hear his name, never mind actually look at him again.

(But the fact is, she allowed it to happen. She had a rule about dates not meeting her son. She broke her own rule and left the boy with someone she barely knew … So I do reserve some blame for her. Though she was otherwise lovely.)

You're right, that was absolutely dreadful and totally unforgivable. The broken arm could easily have been a broken neck though. Dan was nowhere near responsible or regulated enough to put himself in charge of a child and he should never have offered

the80sweregreat · 03/02/2026 10:17

As much as I loved this drama , I agree that Natasha wanting to meet again didn’t ring true at all.

I thought that too.

ColdHenrietta · 03/02/2026 12:26

I mean … He was pretty. But she’s spending her life on tenterhooks now, waiting for her son to break an ankle, or whatever, playing football. Imagine when social services come calling again, if she had to say she’d taken up again with the irresponsible fool who ruined her good name as a mother?

Lottapianos · 03/02/2026 13:21

'I mean … He was pretty'

Well, I can't say I agree with that, but even if he looked like Daniel Craig in his blue speedos, it would be a hard no! 😁

ColdHenrietta · 03/02/2026 13:27

Daniel Craig does nothing for me.
