I am so glad this is back. TV at its best!

Mad Breaking Bad GIF by MOODMAN

I’m on episode 2, of season 1

olivia Coleman is telling Tom hiddleston that he will get to the underbelly of Hugh Laurie’s operation but will be permenantly terrified

the series would end there with me going to bed! The prozzie was stunning and brave but fucking hell, no way would I get involved

queenofwandss · 01/01/2026 22:00

So excited it’s back! Re-watching the first series before starting the second.

SwedishEdith · 01/01/2026 22:10

Loved that. Slick and scary.

Britpopbaby · 01/01/2026 23:01

Also watching the second episode of season two! I’d binge this if I could. It is well plotted, suspenseful and has fully fledged characters. A top watch and great news that there is gonna be a season three! Tom Hiddleston is under rated as an actor!

Really?
I don't think he is underrated at all.
He is extremely well known through the Marvel movies which has a global audience.

I agree he's not underrated as an actor, but I've never seen a single Marvel movie!

To me, he is a serious stage actor, best known for Shakespeare and Pinter (I've seen him in plays by both, and he was fab). He's up for an award for playing Benedick in 2025, and he first came to fame on TV for playing the young Prince Hal in The Hollow Crown. He's the real deal.

Britpopbaby · 01/01/2026 23:12

Yes is the real deal but loads of people probably only know him from the Marvel films rather than all of his other work.

Anyone seen the first episode of season 2? I just watched it and I thought he made a very silly decision to just bring his team into an op abroad, seemingly with no backup and little planning?! And then it unsurprisingly goes tits up. Where was the authorisation from above to do that?

I do enjoy his character but it's not a promising start tbh.

I have seen the first and second ( second is on I Player) I like that he went rogue.

@Britpopbaby I take it back after seeing the second episode, things have improved considerably 😆 and I'm glad it didn't go unnoticed he just went rogue.

Our sultry Roxy is an intriguing character! Liked the reveal about Teddy too, made sense. I feel that things are getting pretty homoerotic between Jonathan and Teddy after watching the last bit, remember there's that scene from the trailer where they're dancing with her between them, while touching. Is he going to have a threesome to maintain his cover? Anything for the job and all that.

Britpopbaby · 03/01/2026 15:18

New episode every Sunday on I Player!

Not sure why I am watching this as I find the main character really irritating!

And some of the plot implausible.

But would like to ask, if any one has the time, what was the "trauma" that Jonathon suffered at the end of series 1?

I cant remember.

Or was it just the having to present a false persona to do his "job".

Thanks

@IwantToRetire Multiple things caused his trauma I'd say. The stress of having to live a double life, knowing he'd be likely tortured and killed if he was ever caught, the fact that Jed came to harm because he slept with her and got her involved in what he was doing. Seeing the suffering of the villagers and those who were murdered by Roper in his camp. Having to murder Corky in cold blood, as much as he disliked him. Being found out and attacked by Roper when they sussed him.

Probably more but those are the main things I could think of!

Thanks, I do remember towards the end the violence etc., got more extreme.

Now it makes me realise I forget how he got involved in the first place.

Was he an existing agent, or was he an "innocent" outsider who got trapped into the role by Olivia Coleman's character.

IwantToRetire · 04/01/2026 00:43

I have watched episode 2 and wondered how much in playing the part of someone who likes to drink he could stay alert to his circumstandes in the final scenes.

Innocent outsider.

Innocent outsider.

In the end I looked up a synopsis of the first series, and was reminded that he did indeed start of as a night manager.

" ... Jonathan Pine was recruited by British intelligence officer Angela Burr to infiltrate arms dealer Richard Roper's circle, motivated by his guilt over a woman's death after he disclosed documents to her, leading him to seek atonement and revenge by going undercover, staging a criminal past to gain Roper's trust ... "

So still being driven by emotions rather than the cold, calculations of Angela Burr.

@IwantToRetire Definitely recommend watching the first series again before continuing. I just watched it again before starting the new one and it holds up very well, also good to remind you of all the finer details. Looking forward to episode 3 tonight!

IwantToRetire · 12/01/2026 21:17

I now realise binge watching isn't possible.

Found series 3 just a little bit far fetched.

And the Jonathon Pine character becoming more and more implausible.

Its like some 70s James Bond film.

mumontherun14 · 12/01/2026 21:35

Oh I really liked episode 3 although yes it is all a little far fetched but I’m enjoying it. So annoying that need to wait till next Sunday now!

Yes I meant episode 3 not series!

I suppose I want it just a bit more grounded.

How did he survive all those drugs and drink?????

2026onwardsandup · 12/01/2026 22:15

In episode 2 , he gets drunk and takes Cocaine ( I assume ) and we also see his drink being spiked with more cocaine .
How can he still hold his cover under those circumstances ? He has no control over how much he is taking .
we see him stumble at one point , then ends up in the pool . Ok I get artistic licence , but how can he keep himself safe in those circumstances ? Does he pretend to be drunker / under the influence more than he is . Is there anything he can take in advance to soak up the alcohol /drugs ?
When he was being briefed on the new character of Matthew the description provided was that he liked to drink etc .

So this would always be a risk for him .

HappyFace2025 · 12/01/2026 22:18

The end scene in episode three made me cheer!
