Just watching on Disney plus about this YouTube mum who was convicted of child abuse regarding her six children. Anyone else think the dad got away with it? He would have known for example that his son was sleeping on a bean bag for months.

I watched this ages ago. I can't quite remember the details but yes, he was surely complicit. Horrendous story.

Glad there’s a thread now. He really worries me when he says he still loves her. I’m not sure he would have passed a court patenting assessment in the uk nor the finding of fact.
the bit where the elder boy calls him when ruby id arrested as weird too.

Yes, I do. However because there wasn’t a trial there was a lot that would have come out to the general public that we don’t now know. I’ve always assumed that the kids must have told the police things about their mother that has absolved their father because this was a big and shocking case and I just don’t believe that the police would not pursue him otherwise.

I’ve watched an interview that was given by a man whose wife was also ‘counselled’ by Hildebrand and she just took over their marriage completely and like Frankie’s husband, this bloke was pushed out of his family and replaced by hildebrand.

Franke was a controlling nutcase before JH ever got involved.

True. She does seem to have been a stronger character than her husband. However he didn't seem to intervene in the rough treatment of the children.

There's quite a few treads going back a few years

I got sucked right down that rabbit hole. So many layers - the cultural norms, the Mormon beliefs about getting in to heaven via marriage to a righteous man, the way women and young girls are encouraged to confide about sex to their “bishops” who are just random males not senior clerics, and get no training beyond growing up in a misogynist religion, the doomsday preppers, visions of glory book, Jodi’s weird possession schtick, Utah’s complete lack of child protection, the prison phone calls, Ruby’s horrific diary. Ugh I need a wash just thinking about it.

Kevin is a very weak character in a culture that values men who are strong, righteous, leaders of their household, and Ruby was a fundamentally unmaternal woman in a culture where woman are only valued for motherhood. They were both shitty parents, and the prison phone calls made it obvious he was only telling the authorities what he needed them to believe, to get those kids back.
