Subtitles on ITVX, what am I missing?

Our sky stream subscription is coming to an end and we're not planning to renew, but just to go back to just using the smart TV and broadband.

DD is Deaf, and one of the reasons we went for sky a couple of years ago was that when you watch live on ITVX, you can't get subtitles. Everything I read at the time said that was a known problem and should have been resolved at the end of 2023.

On googling the question again now it doesn't seem to be a current issue any more so I thought I should be able to get the subtitles to work, but having connected the TV to the internet again with the sky box off this morning I still can't get subtitles on live tv through itvx.

Any tips from anyone or have ITV just decided that deaf people don't need to watch live tv?

I searched for this, just out of interest as it seems so strange.

Are you using Freeview or Chromecast? If so still seems to be a problem.

Subtitles are available on all live and FAST channels on all platforms except for Freeview and Chromecast.

Seems really strange as so many people use Freeview.

Hope you get it sorted.

I watch ITVX through a firestick and can get subtitles for live stuff.
It's quite hard to find the subtitle on/off switch though - the app is a bit rubbish it also sometimes throws you off for no reason

@IwantToRetire I saw that bit of information too, after posting. It's MAD isn't it?!

Anyway, I've done what I should have done in the first place, phoned sky and got them to reduce their renewal quote of approx triple what we currently pay to........ the same as what we currently pay.

Absolute shysters. They must make so much money from people who just let things roll on. It wasn't even difficult to have the conversation - I think the strongest thing I said was 'that's a bit much isn't it?'

We would have liked to go back to just the broadband but it's just not fair on DD.

If its any comfort, I have found that with Virgin Media. If you let them just roll over contracts you are nearly always get less for more.

Glad you found a solution.

Not that is excuses having a service in this day and age that doesn't provide for people who are deaf!

We have a Deaf family member too, subtitles are intermittent and very delayed on live programmes with ITVX when they do work.

I think channel 4 or 5 are also quite difficult as they don’t have a black background so the subtitles aren’t clear, another one uses the same colour text regardless of speaker which causes some confusion.

This is why we have had to stick to Sky.

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 17/11/2025 19:26

@ErmThisOne I'm sort of reassured that another family has come to the same conclusion - but honestly what a situation, it's unbelievable.

I emailed them to ask them about it back in 2021 and they were hoping to have had it resolved by the end of the year. It has not been resolved. Frustrating as like I say it’s not just ITV, and we are as good as forced into paying a premium.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/11/2025 19:09

I watch IACGMOOH live and get subtitles ?

BaldricksWife · 23/11/2025 20:16

Blondes, I also use subtitles but there are none showing for me watching I'm A Celeb live . Having to watch it a day behind atm. Sigh.

Blondeshavemorefun · 23/11/2025 21:44

JustAMiddleAgedDirtBagBaby · 24/11/2025 07:24

How are you watching it Blondes? Where we live aerials don't work and we don't have a satellite dish so it's all over the broadband for us. If you go to ITVX and 'live tv' there are no subtitles. It's possibly only a problem via certain routes (Freeview is mentioned above) but those are the routes accessible to us.
