A quiet corner of MN for serious addicts of Kdrama, or the K-curious. Most of our viewing is drawn from Netflix, Viki, Amazon Prime, AppleTV and Disney+. There are also platforms streaming content illegally if you go looking. We don’t promote them as they are peppered with pop-ups of “Olga” and friends offering a good time, but we can point you in the right direction. We also dip into Japanese, Taiwanese & Chinese drama - the best are listed below.

The previous thread is here. Our cumulative list includes previous threads’ recommendations and favourites. Shows with a star are more uniformly loved or admired. On genre categories, most Korean dramas have multiple strands - e.g. supernatural, romance with a thriller; crime series with fantasy elements. Genre-busting mash-ups are normal. Series tagged as dark may also have moments of comedy or the absurd, likewise fluff can have heavier moments. Tonal chaos is part of kdrama’s charm. Shop for Killers 2 lacked the substance of S1, so was a bit disappointed about that.

@mrsfeatherbottom We enjoyed it. I liked the office scenes best and I loved Team 3, they were so funny and well acted.
Do Korean companies really have a team responsible for checking on the morals and behaviour of its employees, I wonder?

I liked Filing for Love but felt like it ran out of steam at the end.

The Midnight Romance in Hagwon has been added to Netflix so I thought I’d give it a go. Jeez. The pressure everyone is under - kids, staff, parents - is suffocating. Much as I like Wi Ha Joon I don’t thank I can do it. Kdrama needs to be enjoyable.

Thanks for the update @Andante57! I really liked it at the beginning but thought it dropped off towards the end. I really like both leads but wasn’t convinced by them as a couple. Still, it was good.

Boaty and Mrs Feather yes it ran out of steam before the end. However the scene when the high-powered investigator Noh Ki Jun was demoted to team 3 and his first phone call was someone complaining about his colleague farting in the office was hilarious.

I’m rewatching Hometown Cha Cha Cha this weekend - it was the first kdrama I ever watched - 160 something dramas ago!!

I am toying with rewatching Mr Sunshine, my first kdrama. It was so fresh & exciting first time that I don’t want to spoil my good memories if it seems more trope-laden with veteran’s eyes.

You know, I’ve not watched Mr Sunshine. No particular reason. Should I add it to my list?

Absolutely. Get past the slightly overblown first episode and it becomes a thing of beauty. The cinematography is exquisite, along with the acting and production design. Yoo Yeon Seok has never bettered his brooding, smouldering performance as local yakuza Dong-Mae. It’s a treat.

Sounds good, boaty. Will add it to my list.

I’ve still one episode of A Bona Fide Killer to watch to bring me up to date but is anyone else waiting for the smelly guy at work to get a glow up and turn out to be gorgeous and get with the poison girl? Also, I cringed so hard for the sister in that pink dress at the housewarming. Hilarious.

Dream to You (Viki) is slipping down a treat. Logging a platform 9.4, there are enough ups and downs in the plot to keep you invested with some emotional moments that might elicit a tear or two and a couple of drama tropey characters for 'colour'. ML, Hwang In Youp has the most perfect skin or dang, those filters are good!

I binged the lot over the weekend.

Yep, smelly tech guy will definitely have a glow up. 👍 I’m still trying to figure out why hacker guy is so borderline possessive and weird about Director Yoo. She’s going to have to deal with him at some point if he crosses a line.

Started Our Sticky Love yesterday, so far so good, thanks for the tip. Been watching Better Late Than Single, the dating show for long standing singles with my fav Seo In-guk on the panel. Also getting ready to start The Early Spring a C-drama on Netflix with the fine actor Jing Boran (from Road Home) as the ML. Looks a bit more steamy than we commonly get from China, and Netflix is carrying the whole 16 episodes as originally filmed but in China it will be 24 ep as seems censorship has added some scenes or maybe they have cut the length of episodes. Boaty I started on Midnight Romance in Hagwon for the same reasons as you but have just parked it as well.

A Bona Fide Killer is hitting every mark for me at the mo (pun intended). The sister’s friends-to-lovers side arc would make a fabulous little drama in its own right. The scene in the park was brilliant.

I'm also enjoying A Bona Fida Killer, though struggling to see how it can end well. The contrast between the work and home storylines is very entertaining, though.

Four Hands, Two Sonatas, meanwhile, started rather more dramatically than I expected, given the premise! Not that I need an exciting plot to convince me to watch it. I'd happily watch Song Kang just playing the piano if I'm honest 😂 . (And he plays pretty well in real life too, I believe, I saw something on Youtube once about him preparing for a piano concert).

A Bona Fide Killer is good. The husband is the cutest! And the little sister and the cop are so funny. Hope they end up together. Still waiting for smelly guy’s glow up!

I’m really enjoying My Bias, My Boss. Will be starting Four Hands this week.

Anyone watch Mousetrap?

I just started series 2 of Badly in Love on Netflix - a Japanese dating show with people with sketchy pasts (hostess girls, ex convicts, drug addicts etc). It’s crazy. Sort of the polar opposite of the wee cuties in Better Late Than Single! Very watchable but I’m hoping they’re given therapy - some really sad background stories.
